Glad to see that Schaeffer is getting the play-by-play job.

Uncle Teddy, as Jerry would say, "You can hang a star on that baby!" Kick back and enjoy, you earned it.

Only the oldies will remember how completely he dominated the airwaves back in the day. Radio, TV, announcing everything. You could literally wake up with Ted on the radio, drive home with him, hear him on Sports on Channel 8, then listen to him broadcasting any variety of sporting events and emcee at so many different events. Hawking so many local businesses like as if he actually used them. He oversaturated the market, but never seemed to be daunted by it - or negatively affected by it. Not even sure the word Icon describes just how thoroughly he dominated the local market back them I guess he needed the money for all the alimony (at least that's what he always said…) Always see him carrying his snack back from the floor level stand to his seat at Viejas before the game. And then he's out of that seat and on his way to the Viejas lot seconds after the buzzer sounds.

Do color for playbyplay. Teddy is still strong with that.

Ted came to SD in 1979 when I was 10 and between the Aztecs, Padres (didn’t he even call Chargers games for a bit?) he’s been the voice of San Diego sports for a generation. Did he lose a step lately with his radio calls on football and basketball, good Lord yes. But like others have said, he’s an SD icon and deserves to ride off into the sunset and be fondly remembered. Thanks Uncle for all the memories!

For sure, he was an icon and a face you had to get used to because he was going to be on your screen whether you liked it or not, in a variety of capacities. I had no problem with Teddy. I really liked him with Coleman on the TV and radio broadcast. Good times.

Do color for playbyplay. Teddy is still strong with that. If he did color he'd be like Walton. He'd never let what was actually going on in the game interfere with his stories or opinions. Thanks but no thanks.

Never understood the Leitner love. It was nice he supported the Aztecs but outside of working Jerry Coleman calling Padre games I never really thought he was interesting or called a good game. And recently - WAY past due to hang it up.

I guess here's the disconnect with some. Before Ted we had Ron Reina, a supurb broadcaster and Aztec. He was a class guy. My fav. When Ted came in he was a change. In the old days he was always entertaining and a good "read". While many didn't enjoy his Schtick, he was entertaining and actually knew the teams and sport. So I guess what I am saying is that I always prefered him to most of the broadcast groups we have to listen to now that we have made the ""Big time". JMO

Do color for playbyplay. Teddy is still strong with that. He's not a color guy - he may be good at telling stories but he doesn't have the experience of being a former player/coach

I was a fan of Ted Leitner going back to the 80’s. His channel 8 sports report: “my Padres” when they won; “your Padres” when they lost. He was fine broadcasting Aztecs basketball games, too, but he should have retired three or four years ago.

He was fine broadcasting Aztecs basketball games, too, but he should have retired three or four years ago. My favorite, since I wasn't a hockey fan either, were his hockey highlights. He'd show about 10-15 seconds of a brawl on the ice, no scores, no commentary, then just stare at the camera with a wry smile and end his report.

maybe we can enjoy him even more now that his departure from football and then in another year Basketball
although it sure seems that he has problems with the quick play in basketball but Aztec Fast might also have been a problem
