According to Aztec Tracker, over 150 schools reached out to Mahaney, including all blue bloods. I also read him and Randy Bennet go back a long ways, and he initially affirmed he was staying after the season only to change his mind recently. That's why it feels like the only possible reason he is leaving is there's a bidding war going on and the offers are too good to turn down. The coach who he's really close with left & went to Michigan. Aiden went in the portal shortly thereafter and is likely to follow him there. It's not always about NIL, and even less common to be about the highest bidder. The fit and other factors come into play. SDSU wasn't interested.

many of us SDSU fans thought that things would get easier for recruiting after doing so well in MM for 23 and then at least SW16 in 2024 but now NIL has made it even more difficult to recruit transfers
What we sometimes forget the transfers have all the leverage - so quite a few of them have NIL as being quite an important factor in their decision - it may not be for all but it sure seems that things are going that way
Another point - announcers usually comment that if you are even thinking of going to SDSU you better be able to play defense - and as Dutcher says Not every player fits the Aztec way of playing basketball
So SDSU can zero in but it is the transfer that has the final decision if they want to zero in on SDSU or pass on the opportunity for the better NIL situation
SDSU lost out on a few guys who were thinking of coming to play the 5 position but went to other schools where the NIL was better
So it could be "here We Go Again "

Wow. Didn't know we'd already passed the 'finish line' of transfer season. Throw in the towel. Drop down to NAIA.

Wow. Didn't know we'd already passed the 'finish line' of transfer season. Throw in the towel. Drop down to NAIA. All you have to do is look at all the players we've lost the last two years because of NIL: KJ, and now Parrish. The program is doomed, doomed I say. I have donated to the Mesa Foundation so I hope those on here who like to point out how much more other schools are dishing out have done so as well. I wouldn't bet the mortgage on that, however. It would be nice if we could find at least a couple deep pocket companies here in San Diego to donate to our NIL. For me, Qualcomm, Jack-in-the-Box, Cubic, WD-40 and Waxie come to mind immediately. It is interesting to see how well we have done despite not offering big money to SELECT players. It has sure worked out for UNM whose coach was begging to leave for anyone that would have him this year. Same with the coach in Reno.

I look forward to the day we can talk about Aztec Football the way we talk about Aztec basketball! If we ccan keep Lewis that would help. Still have to see what a gameday coach he is but he has excited the players and the community already. Really too bad the PAC broke up, joing them would have helped our FB program immensely. But, I do see another realignment before 2030 because schools made decisions out of panic and will likely realize that starting next season. I am hoping, at the very least, we can join a smaller 8-10 school PAC and make about $8M per year or so on the media deal. But, things are heading towards streaming rather quickly now.
