Finally made it to a game this season. Was kind of sorry I did. UNLV wins 9-2.
The Aztecs took a 2-0 lead after 1, getting 3 hits in the inning. Then--only 3 more hits the rest of the way. Top of the 2nd inning , UNLV got 6 runs, and that was about it. Aztecs pitchers gave up 10 hits, walked 7, and hit 4 batters. Looking at the stats, the pitching has been horrendous all season. Tonight continued that trend.
Aztecs last in the conference.
Games both tomorrow and Sunday at 1 pm.
Note: The Aztecs only have 4 seniors on the squad this year--they are loaded with underclassmen.

You'd think when they hired a pitching coach as manager, pitching might be our strength? That's MOST DEFINITELY not the case. Not even close.
Maybe a recently retired guy from the Washington Nationals is looking for something to do.

That's a weak excuse. They have sophs and jrs too. I think Cole is lost as the HC. There just doesn't appear to be any strategy or preparation for games. Getting swept by AFA was a classic example. I've looked at all the past game stats which are very revealing, for the most part. So regardless of underclassment one would think the team would show some improvement as the season progresses. Not happening. |

Baseball is not senior-centric. Most players are draft eligible after their junior season and, if good enough, will generally enter -- unless they're somewhere like LSU where they'll get paid better than in the minor leagues. It's a sport dominated by underclassmen.

As bad as the pitching has been this year, I looked up the hit batter stats to see if they are at an all-time record pace. Surprisingly, they’re only the fifth in all of college baseball this year in the most hit batters. I would’ve thought hitting three or four batters game would be a record.

Give Cole some time. Wasn't left with any talent. Give him some time with the freshmen. He should get time to install his program. It should have been apparent to everyone that this was going to be another rebuild year when he announced the starters and it was a ton of underclassmen. I missed it for sure. |
