He’s got a shot but he has to turn it on tomorrow. Bryson likely to fade given his accuracy off of the tee. Schefler will be there. Great to see Max playing well.

Scottie birdies 18 to take 1-stroke lead heading into Sunday at -7.
Xander played a magnificent round today to reach -2 (T6). Looks like he might be paired up with Bryson tomorrow.

Xander's putting was fabulous today. I've seen this before in another tournament. To be able to do it two days in a row is extremely tough, for any pro. The good thing is the wind is forecasted to die down quite a bit so expect to see a lot of low scores tomorrow. If Scheffler gets overtaken, the leader will have to keep him on his heels because he always seems to make a run when he gets behind. Xander will have to shoot his best round in the Masters to beat him. If Xander plays within himself and not get intimidated by DeChambeau's drives, then he'll beat him. It's drive for show, putt for dough. So the key is Xander has to putt as well as he did today.

I'm not sure what is more difficult to watch...
MWC teams in March Madness or Xander on Sundays?
Finishes in 8th place after shooting a 1-over final round.

It’s purely mental. Im starting to think he may not have the mindset to be a closer. At least in majors. But thats okay. He is still damn good enough to make a helluva living at what he loves to do.

Agree. He may end up holding the unwanted moniker of "best player to not win a major" for a while. It's a shame because he really tears it up on Fridays and Saturdays.

With his performance at the Masters, Xander is currently ranked the 3rd best golfer in the world, behind #1 Scheffler and #2 McIlroy. No too shabby. www.pgatour.com/stats/detail/186

One of the announcers in the earlier rounds mentioned Xander hired a new swing coach. I think it's working since more of his drives are landing on the fairways. I guess his old man is now on the outs. I hope his next hire is a sports psychologist who can work on his mindset to finish in the closing rounds.

To be honest, winning the Gold in the Olympics is like a 5th major - and it only comes around every four years. If Scheffler makes putts, however, he is nearly Tiger like.

I don’t think it’s like winning a major at all. There were only 60 competitors from around the world that participated in the men’s side. And only about 25 of them were on the PGA tour. That’s hardly a Field worthy of a major

As an aside, Olympic golf qualifying relies primarily on the very flawed OWGR (Official World Golf Rankings) system. Xander is #3 on that list, behind Scheffler and McIlroy.
Each country is allocated a maximum of 4 slots.
The top 15 automatically qualify for Paris 2024.

Big Xander fan here. I volunteer at the Farmers at Torrey pines and had a moment to say Go Aztecs to him and was greeted with a big smile and thanks. His caddie is also an Aztec.
And SDSU men’s golf finished a very respectable 7th in the Western collegiate today against top notch competition including Stanford, Washington, California, Oregon, Arizona and Texas. Justin Hastings finished tied for second and another golfer tied for 4th.

I agree that Xander is a great golfer and a good guy that all Aztecs should be proud of, however, winning the Tour Championship that year didn't mean he was the best golfer that year. The final few Fed Ex tournaments of the season are significantly weighted with Fed Ex points so often a player claims that prize even if they didn't have as good of a year as someone else. In 2017 Xander won 2 golf tournaments including the Tour Championship but he still didn't even beat out Justin Thomas for the Fed Ex Title. Xander came in 3rd behind Thomas and Spieth. Thomas won 5 Tournaments in 2017, including the PGA.

He's played in 28 majors and made the top 10 in 12 of them and missed the cut in just three. He just turned 30. Mickelson won his first major at 34 and made top 10 just nine times in his first 28 majors and missed the cut in four. Remember what everyone said about Phil - couldn't win the big one. He finally won one in his 47th major...
Xander will break through and win a major soon.
It's not really a fair comparison but Tiger made the top 10 in 14 of his first 28 majors (just two more than Xander) - he just happened to win 8 of them - and missed the cut in two.
