Kentucky scheduled a home and home series with Gonzaga. first game was at kentucky in the most recent year. if SDSU is quad 1 game, i don't think this is out of the question this could happen. It's a possibility, especially considering Pope's previous BYU/SDSU connections. With the growing recognition of the Aztec program in the national press, it could benefit our program. However, it's worth noting that we haven't had much success playing on CBS.

Every time I've seen an SDSU vs BYU game, the announcers always mention that Mark Pope and Brian Dutcher are good friends. We scheduled BYU pretty consistently with Pope as head coach. What are the chances this leads to a home and home series with Kentucky? Zero

The flight to play At Kentucky for 1 game could be a very long trip for a school - do not know if the Zags got a good paycheck for it or if Kentucky will be playing At the Zags this year
Also there are thoughts that Stanford HC is being considered for HC at BYU - so there might be another twirl in the Coaching changes
Who might be the new coach at Stanford if that happens - some MW coaches ?
Listened to national radio - TV shows - and they suggest that the new HC at Kentucky will be able to do as much on their own as the former HC was able to do - the bigger names turned Kentucky down - so the new HC might be on a shorter leash

the situation is the Mountain schools have a very difficult time getting quality teams that will travel to those schools unless they are forced to by the MW schedule . A quality team is not going to travel to those schools with the travel obstacles and altitude - which can allow a Mountain school to beast a more talented school . So they have lobbied for the 20 game schedule. A quality school would have to be totally ignorant or unaware to play at those Mountain schools There are also very little sympathy points to play there and players even get ill or play lousy in those situations So maybe Gloria has witnessed the situation and realized the problems it can cause for your better teams - if the MW is trying to get teams in MM with better seeds The smaller MW Schools need to be willing to travel or do neutral site games to build their resumes. Coaches and Schools that insist on Home and Home scheduling only hurt their Teams ability to play top notch opponents and improve their standing with the Committee.

you are correct but until the Mountain schools put those plans into motion and have success then they will lobby for the 20 games - we are talking two more then the 18 games - 1 home game and 1 road game - but it does mean the MW conference schedule starts 1 week earlier in December
Little doubt Dutcher has already figured out in his set up for the OOC
Think Dutcher and St Mary's have been looking to continue a neutral court game or go to a H and A series
Can Dutcher get UCLA - USC - Washington ( who now has a former MW coach ) or other former PAC schools
Key of course is the quality of the OOC T the Aztecs play in - would be helpful to get 3 games T - but a decent 2 games doesn't hurt
Does UCSD still want a game at the V
Dutcher knows the value of the OOC and will schedule accordingly

They likely will not change it this year, but it will be reviewed. The ACC and Big East as well. They feel they were dissed by the Committee. Personally, I say have sixteen play-in games. All games would pair bubble Teams against the lower level AQ's. That would allow more Conferences to have round robin play and not be penalized for less OOC opportunities. It would also allow the lower tier Teams in a Conference to schedule an extra Conference home game. Everbody is happy.

Interesting concept, but with a $2,000,000 payout per game for each conference, in my opinion, ultimately nobody ends up completely satisfied. I believe that the Power Five / Power Six conferences would prefer if mid-majors and smaller conferences didn't participate. The odds are already heavily against the 200+ schools and conferences that only have single-bid status. I hope Gloria Nevarez and Mountain West Conference athletic directors aren't overlooking the potential downsides of a 20-game MW schedule. Next year, the conference might not be as competitive, making bids much harder to secure. Additionally, the committee may reconsider the Mountain West's performance, given their 4-6 record, and 2-5 w/o SDSU. Playing a Stronger SOS (OOC games) is a greater benefit than playing MW (conference games) in a down year, and perhaps any year. The reduction of ACC and, Big East schools did not go unnoticed by the press & committee. SDSU: UAB (win), Yale (win) UConn (loss) 2-1 USU: TCU (win), Purdue (loss) 1-1 CSU: Virginia (win), Texas (loss) 1-1 BSU: Colorado (loss) 0-1 UNM: Clemson (loss) 0-1 Nevada: Dayton (loss) 0-1, ranked the worst meltdown in the NCAA Tournament. Total 4-6

Gundo,
I absolutely agree about the scheduling. The MW is going to find itself a 1-2 bid Conference like thr WCC if they don't come to their senses
As to the Tourney, the NCAA could offer $100k to participants in the play-in, to cover costs, then $1.9 mil for making the First Round.

be it a 18 or 20 game MW schedule the teams should have learned that just getting into MM is not enough
So they had better spend the time and set up decent OOC - even if it means playing on the road
The Lobos - BSU - Reno- UNLV or whomever thinks they have a quality team needs to spend the time they are not spending on the Portal to set up their OOC
Dutcher proved that even though SDSU lost to GCU and BYU - it may have been worth it to schedule them ( even if it was the H and A series with them ) There is little doubt the road win at the Zags was key for the good seed and beating St Mary's on neutral court - both ended up #5 seeds also
If a MW HC thinks they have a decent team then schedule your OOC in a quality way

Well, lo and behold, St. John's is aiming to seal the deal with New Mexico at MSG! Let's hope they pick a date post-Thanksgiving so as not to turn into a family feud at the Pitino dinner table.
