Every time I've seen an SDSU vs BYU game, the announcers always mention that Mark Pope and Brian Dutcher are good friends. We scheduled BYU pretty consistently with Pope as head coach. What are the chances this leads to a home and home series with Kentucky?

Dutch on the radio said he would play anyone anywhere but it would have be in the same time zone-granted BYU is in the Mountain time zone. He wants Aztec fans the opportunity to watch the team on the road. It would be fun to have a H & H with Kentucky.

What are our odds of getting a H & H with Kentucky?

He doesn't want to travel across multiple time zones just to play a game. He mentioned playing all the tough teams out West: @gcu, zags, St. Mary's, @byu, Stanford, Cal, etc. Given those parameters, there are plenty of teams to play in the Pacific and Mountain time zones: Arizona, Arizona St., UCLA (if they don't wimp out), USC, Oregon, Washington, Oregon St., Washington St., Utah, etc. But Kentucky? He might bend the rules for that one. How epic would an SDSU-KY game at Viejas be?

I doubt it. With BYU they needed to play hard to come by top teams. Won't have that same issue with Kentucky so won't be desperate to play us.

Us getting a 5 seed while the rest of the MW teams were under-seeded proves that the committee sees us as a different animal. Like Gonzaga and the WCC. Playing us used to be dumb because we were good and undervalued on your resume. Now we're a bit of a brand name on a resume and thus desirable.
At this point, I wouldn't be surprised if our scheduling rivals that of Gonzaga's going forward. A H/H with Kentucky seems very realistic once Pope has that program up and running. The committee announced to the world that OOC scheduling is extremely important and we are basically a guaranteed top 35 NET ranking every year.

It will be harder to pull off, with the MWC and their "wisdom" of going to a 20-game conference schedule.

It will be harder to pull off, with the MWC and their "wisdom" of going to a 20-game conference schedule. Did you hear of Gloria Nevarez and the MW may consider a vote to revert to the 18-game schedule? The ACC is already planning to return to 18 games, and the Big East is mulling over it too. ACC basketball coaches want the switch back to an 18-game schedule. Their argument holds weight, especially with the league expanding from 15 to 18 members in 2024-25. The ACC moved to 20 games in 2019-20 to boost TV inventory for the newly-launched ACC Network. Some coaches and administrators thought it would lead to more NCAA tournament bids, but that hasn't panned out— the conference only secured five, a record low. This year Big East only three schools. In addition, the Big East vs Big XII Challenge will not be played this year, the Big XII no longer needs to schedule difficult OOC games given the growth and expansion of the conference and they will now go to a 20-game schedule. This is not an official MWC Topic' but could be discussed based on this year's NCAA Tournament selection of 6 teams, and 4 getting bounced in the first round.

If Dutcher would try for a series with Kentucky would he also see if there might be another school in the area so they could get 2 games near that area - same with Kentucky might they want to play another game on the West Coast with another CA team to make the flight even more worth while ?
Will also add who might replace Pope at BYU - is the BSU or CSU HC in the thoughts for BYU ?

Kentucky will not play State in a H/H. The OOC scheduling will be tough going forward. We had may hay with some of the P12 in scheduling but it may be a tough row to hoe going forward.
I don't see them willing to play State in the same frequency going forward. The MTE will be the best opportunity for State and none of those games will be at viejas.
What does that leave for a home slate for State?
Here are the home opponents the last 5 years. It will be MTE, neutral site games, a heavy dose of Big West, and then pots and pans.
23/24 Fullerton LBSU PLNU Irvine St. Katherine Stanford
22/23 Fullerton BYU Irvine Occidental Troy Kennesaw UCSD
21/22 Riverside ASU UT Arlington LBSU Fullerton UCSD
20/21 UCLA Irvine St. Katherine Pepperdine BYU
19/20 Texas Southern Grand Canyon Long Island Tennessee State SD Christian Cal Poly

The bigger question is whether BYU has any players we'd like to poach.

would guess that Dutcher - chats with other coaches who were at Spokane and also possibly in Boston or even the guys that were at the Final 4 Coaches luncheon to try to come up with some quality teams for OOC
What T will the Aztecs be in this upcoming November or December
Some rumors out there that BYU might try to get the Stanford Coach is it Matson ? except the Buy out clause 0r an assistant At Utah or UNLV .... ?
If it is the Stanford coach then that opens up the vacancy there
Would also guess that the higher quality guys at BYU might want to go to Kentucky with their former coach or check out some of the other Big 12 schools

She has got to be the dumbest commissioner. After years of us telling the conference 20 games was bad they ignore us and move to 20 just to immediately reconsider it after realizing how stupid it is.

the situation is the Mountain schools have a very difficult time getting quality teams that will travel to those schools unless they are forced to by the MW schedule . A quality team is not going to travel to those schools with the travel obstacles and altitude - which can allow a Mountain school to beast a more talented school . So they have lobbied for the 20 game schedule. A quality school would have to be totally ignorant or unaware to play at those Mountain schools
There are also very little sympathy points to play there and players even get ill or play lousy in those situations
So maybe Gloria has witnessed the situation and realized the problems it can cause for your better teams - if the MW is trying to get teams in MM with better seeds

Kentucky scheduled a home and home series with Gonzaga. first game was at kentucky in the most recent year. if SDSU is quad 1 game, i don't think this is out of the question this could happen.
