What is the feeling on the 20% season ticket price increase? Seems a bit steep considering the home games we have been getting the last few years.
Thoughts?

I assume this is for basketball? I'd say it's the price of success...

I don’t mind the increase but their math/reasoning for it doesn’t make any sense. They say due to inflation it costs $650k more in student-athlete scholarships. There are 13 scholarship players on the team. So it now costs $50k more per athlete than last year? Or is this increase supposed to cover every scholarship athlete at the school?

I'm surprised it didn't happen last year. I'll be renewing regardless.

My wallet’s a bit bummed out but I’m not overly surprised.
Last offseason coming off the National Championship game, SDSU increased prices only 5-6% for most sections.
I was expecting this 20% bump to come last year.

Simply put, the tickets are worth way more than the price of season tickets. I didn't have season tickets last year, and ended up paying ridiculous prices. I think I paid $70/piece for Fresno St tickets without seatbacks, for example. Meanwhile, the face value for season tickets for that game probably had a value of $20-30.
I put my deposit in for season tickets next year, and even with a 20% increase, I'll definitely save some money over buying second hand.

The only two sports that contribute and significant money to run all the sports offered by SDSU are Men's Basketball and Football. So all the revenue that these two sports generate, including ticket sales, is used to support every student-athlete's scholarship and all the other athletic department expenses. Basketball is in a position to raise prices, football probably not for a couple of years.

Considering the trash home games we are getting, seems a little steep, i’d like to see it be 10% the next 2 years, then 20% all at once.

It was of interest that they listed various increases that averaged about 5.5% and then raised the ceiling by 20%.
Football will likely suffer - especially if they underperform after the new leadership. There are folks with both FB and MBB season tix who won't put up with the increases.

Collectively they amount to about 22% overall increase in costs to the Ath Dept, not a 5.5% overall increase.

No problems as long as we're competitive nationally and we keep winning.

It depends on what the overall cost of the each of those segments is. If housing went from $10 mil to $11 mil that’s a 10% increase but if food increased 50% from $1 mil to $1.5 mil the overall % increase is about 13.6% (12.5 mil / 11 mil), not 60%. You don’t add the percentages together.

I have had season tickets for about 20+ years and they are still a pretty good value (were $99 per seat my first year). I have the lowest row at the yellow level so based on 16 games, they would be $30 per seat (with basically no service fee - $15 per year). Hopefully last year was an exception as far as the opponents we got (I don't even go to the non-D1 games) but we know there will be 10 MW games, 1 Non-D1 so hopefully a marque team or two each year plus a couple Big West/WCC teams plus a small conference buy game or two. But you pretty much are guaranteed to see win or at worst a close loss in a very fun atmosphere.

At some point within the next year, the Athletics Department will probably conclude their research/survey into what types of renovations they should be applying to Viejas.
Fingers crossed but I won't be surprised when we get hit with another big increase a year from now to help fund the arena renovation.

Alongside annual inflation, we are facing increases in various departmental expenses: • 6% increase in Tuition • 6.5% increase in Housing • 5% increase in Meals • 4.5% increase in other student expenses These increases collectively result in an additional $650,000 in student-athlete scholarships alone."

And that doesn’t equal a 22% increase overall, a la my original post. Those 4 things are in no way close to equal in the cost to the school.
