I thought he retired last year.
I mean, didn't he?
He wasn't on anyone's roster. No one expected him to play.

The scheduled ceremony was cancelled and it was pretty big news at the time. They must have worked something out.

Over the past five seasons, he has pitched a total of 31.1 innings in baseball, with a record of 1-4 across eight games since 2019. His performance has been lacking for years. While he was a standout Aztec player, he was a reliable MLB player when given the opportunity and healthy.
He finishes his career with 113 wins against 62 losses winning 65% of starts, 1,723 K's, and an ERA of 3.02. Shorten career, but some HOF Seasons.

Every MLB player's aim is to be the MVP of a World Series. So his career is complete.

I thought he retired last year. I mean, didn't he? He wasn't on anyone's roster. No one expected him to play. No. He did not retire last year. And yes, he was still on National's roster. He had a contract until 2026. Natonals wanted him to retire last year and forego the rest of his contact. Strasburg wanted to be paid out the rest of his contract and was willing to ride the IR the remainder of his contract. That's what has been the hold up this whole time. They reached an agreement and he officially retire.

Of course he wasn't on their active roster. He was on their IR as do all injured players do. Still on their active payroll, though. Yes, everyone expected his retirement. However, if he would have retired last year when it was expected, he would have lost his contract money. So, he didn't retire. He stayed on the IR and the payroll. That's not retirement. You simply stated that you thought he was already retired and seemed to question the reason of announcing that he has officially retire. Here is the reason. And that is because he never retired until now. They reached an agreement on the payout of his contract.

He should have just stayed on IR. He would have if they didn't agree to payout the remainder of his contract (Which is what he has been doing from last year up until now). They finally agreed to those terms and therefore he announced his retirement.

Ok, so the announcement isn't so much about, "Retirement," as it is a conclusion of a contractual matter. Retirement usually means the end of working, permanently, in a given position. That already happened. That's my point. The announcement is about his contractual status, and not his playing career, which was already over.
