Fresno State hired Vance Walberg as the MBB HC. What a joke. They are so unserious about basketball. Hasn’t coached college in 16 years and was awful at that stop.

The 67-year-old has been coaching basketball for over 40 years and has other high school, junior college, major college, and NBA experience on his resume. He is the King of the Valley for Fresno Basketball, and spent over 30 years in Fresno BB at Newark Memorial, Clovis West, Fresno CC, and now Fresno State. 1978–1981 Mountain View HS 1981–1983 Los Altos HS 1984–1989 Newark Memorial HS
1989–2002 Clovis West HS (343-68 .835 which included 11 league and eight section titles)
2002–2006 Fresno CC (133-11 .924)
2006–2008 Pepperdine (14-35 .286) 2008–2011 UMass (assistant) 2012–2013 Denver Nuggets (assistant) 2013–2015 Philadelphia 76ers (assistant) 2015–2016 Sacramento Kings (assistant) 2016–2024 Clovis West HS (Over two stints 559-104. 843) Clovis claimed 16 league titles and 10 section championships. 2024-present Fresno State

He has been a fixture for Fresno Area Basketball for over 30 years. Sports Illustrated calls Vance Walberg "the Master" of the Dribble Drive Offense and one of the top innovators in the game of basketball today. His offensive scheme was been adopted by John Calipari, Larry Brown, Lawrence Frank, and hundreds of coaches of all levels all over the world From his book Mastering the Dribble Drive Attack Offense: "Based on a unique two point guard (attackers) set, this attack is complemented by two wings and a rim-running post player. The offense features two unconventional ideas: there are no screens and the post player runs to the weak side of the floor. Both features create more space for dribble penetration. Walberg breaks down each player's movement on the floor according to ball penetration. As players react to penetration they move into drag, drop, and rack zones. The goal is to create spacing and gaps and to get to the rack. Walberg also teaches middle and baseline penetration and the kick-back option that can produce open 3-point shots or open drives to the basket. "

Seems like they just went after the easy hire rather than the good hire to move the program forward. He's celebrated as a local legend in the Fresno area and recognized nationally for his innovative offensive strategies. However, the salary for the position is $595,000 per year, which marks the lowest head coaching salary in the Mountain West Conference (MWC). The better coaches in the MW make 2x to 3x more than Fresno State. Fresno isn't able to afford a million-dollar coach, and one of Hut's beef with the Fresno State AD was over the lack of resources for the program.
