Call it was it was. He was retired from basketball and was coaching HS basketball the last 8 years for fun. He probably was talked into taking the job because they expect him to perform a miracle out of nothing. Their top choice ended up staying at Alabama and the rest of the Asst coaches requested more money and probably facility upgrades.

In 2006 he resigned halfway through his 2nd season at Pepperdine, citing "family reasons". At the time he was 14-35 in that year a a half. He's now 67 years old. WTF? But coming from being a high school coach, his new salary probably looks huge. How is a guy who’s been in high school coaching for 8 years and last coached college 16 years ago gonna adapt to the NIL world and transfer portal? This thing is gonna keep Fresno in the basement for years. Hutson voiced concerns about the disparity in resources and attention compared to football and baseball. Walberg is set to become the lowest-paid head coach in the MW, earning $595K, while most others are making two to three times more. Despite being a well-known coach in Fresno and accustomed to being a big fish in a small pond. It will be intriguing to see if he can recruit effectively, especially if there's NIL money available, and whether the team can make significant moves in the transfer portal. He doesn't have any starters returning, and perhaps 1-2 bench players who haven't joined the portal. He is starting from scratch.

it will be interesting to see him run his 2-2-1 press this go around. It works better in high school and JC ball. The automatic TV timeouts gives teams time to rest and adjust to the pressure, which they don't get in HS or JC ball.

It did not hurt the USU coach to have his PG and 4/5 Mr Great O come with him - then built around him with other additions from a variety of other teams and a red shirt freshman
Q on NIL money know at one time players NOT from the US were not allowed to receive NIL money - Or did Kentucky work on getting that changed so they could get NIL money
Will be interesting to see how the former USU coach does at U of Washington - and if the Great O goes with him as they battle in the BIG
The new Fresno HC - will he be able to convince guys to come there - but he will have PT to offer - if other guys decide to leave Fresno

John Welch is becoming the associate head coach at Fresno State under head coach Vance Walberg, per Jon Rothstein. Welch was an Assistant with Kentucky, hired in May of 2023. He was in charge of game planning and workouts. He’s also the father of former Wildcats walk-on and graduate assistant Riley Welch. The UK team’s offense reached new heights this past season and averaged the most points per game in America, and before UK, he coached in the NBA with the Memphis Grizzlies, Denver Nuggets, Brooklyn Nets, Sacramento Kings, and the Los Angeles Clippers.
Fresno should be exciting to watch next year, as Walberg & Welch will speed up the offense.

Did the Assistant Coach apply at SDSU also? Who has Fresno added from the Portal and who have they lost ? John Welch coached at Kentucky last year, and Coach Calipari uses Wahlberg's offensive scheme at Kentucky. Welch & Walberg were associates, and when Calipari left for Arkansas, Welch committed to Fresno State. Welch will be joining new FSU head coach Vance Walberg, the originator of the "dribble drive offense" that Coach Cal made famous. At UK, Welch was responsible for player development while also helping with offensive strategy, scouting, and game-planning. I assume, they start from scratch and look for players who can execute "dribble drive offense." FSU needs to sign up to 10 new players, with very little NIL budget. I doubt that Welch was on Dutch's radar, but I really don't know who has applied for the SDSU job.

"Dribble Drive Offense": This offensive strategy, popularized by coaches like John Calipari, emphasizes dribble penetration and kick-outs to shooters. If FSU wants to implement this style, they would indeed need players who excel at dribbling and driving to the basket, as well as shooters who can capitalize on kick-out passes. As of today they don't have either.

The Portal is open and Fresno is going to need to replace numerous players - can they get quality players to come there ? yes there will be PT but is there also a good amount of NIL money to attract the players that want to have .
The USU coach was able to bring players with him . The Lobos coach was also when he first came to Loboland - and he had his dad's reputation .
Will be interesting to see what the Fresno staff can do with the resources they have .
