Matt Waldron, Ace of the Staff. Not in a million years would anybody have ever thought that. Wow. And, he's doing it against the really good teams as well. Incredible. What's incredible is just how well he's pitched overall. He's started 15 games so far. 15 games 3.46 ERA and 1.16 Whips Take away three terrible games against the Cardinals, Blue Jays and Diamondbacks and his record is incredible: 12 games 2.02 ERA and 0.96 Whips Waldron has been a pleasant surprise (so far). And I am more than pleased to say...I was dead wrong about Merrill becoming the Padres regular CF, as he's had a solid rookie year. Makes me forget about the guy we used to have out there. And, speaking of ex-Padres now with the Yankees--Tim Hill has signed a deal with the Yankees after being DFA'd by the White Sox.

When Minor League guys come up and don't perform there's always a lot of explanations/justifications for them not doing so: their age, experience etc. But then we watch as other team's rookies do anywhere from ok to great. It's nice to finally have a true rookie of ours play so well at the Major L level, especially because he's doing it in so many different areas.

The only thing I said about whoever was going to take Grishams place this year, whether it was a Rookie or by trade, was that I didn't think it would be difficult to surpass Grishams offensive (no pun intended, even though they were) numbers. That is VERY true, so far. Merrill is crushing it. What I did think would happen was that we would really miss him on defense. That did not come true. Merrill is VERY good in the outfield. We are also not missing Grishams speed on the base paths. Merrill can scoot. I've said it before, and I'll say it again. I'm ECSTATIC that we let Grisham go, since we wouldn't have found out how great Merrill is and it was time for him to go. He stunk. 5 tool players are hard to come by. He's close to being one, since his power is showing up. Incredible.

We know the story with Merrill, as he never played CF in the minor leagues, and only played a couple of games in LF last year; Tatis Jr, who went from an exciting young player at SS to becoming one of the better RF in the game in a very short period of time (and by the end of the 4 game series with the Brewers this weekend, will have played more games in the OF than at SS); to Profar, who went from a quickly promoted infield prospect with the Rangers who couldn't stay healthy or hit very well, to becoming a decent LF in his 11th big league season, while having a career year at the plate--so far. Profar (as of today) should be a LOCK to make the ASG.

I'm guessing nobody on here will question whether Tatis will have trouble "picking it up" again, especially early on. Like I said before, he's waaaay too talented not to.
Once he started taking it the other way, he righted himself. That's what you do as a hitter when you're struggling. Up the middle, or go the other way. That's been the fix decades

Nice to see Mazur working through the first inning tonight. Could be a bit of a breakthrough for him in his development. Trusting your defense makes challenging the hitters a whole lot easier in those situations. Too bad he couldn’t get that last out. Plenty left to work on, but he should feel ok about tonight’s performance. Has to reduce the walks, but he had mostly first pitch strikes tonight.

Atta boy Peralta. Two, two out walks and then a hit. Way to shut the door on em. Sheesh

My wife FINALLY thinks I'm brilliant. When Matsui came in to pitch in a high-leverage situation, I boldly predicted to my wife that while Matsui was in the game, there would be at least multiple runners on base that inning and he would probably walk the first hitter. He started out 3-0 but came bak to get him but when Matsui finally left the game with the bases loaded she looked over at me with what I think was at least some mild respect. (or maybe it was the wine)

Terrible defense in the 9th: Arraez can't reach a ground ball, Campusano can't block a ball in the dirt and Azocar gets turned around on a ball to the wall. Brewers tie up the game. Pads are really hard to watch.

Pads are really hard to watch. Yellich should have never gotten on as the first batter. Estrada was squeezed hard by the home-plate umpire on two "strikes" in a row on a two-strike count that were called balls before he went ahead and walked him.
