I'll take the reaping of a Series win against that team, at their place, all day long. Their bullpen is dead last in strikeout rate and they've been buoyed by ridiculous performances that aren't sustainable by a number of players with no track record of sustained success. They are terrible against teams over .500 and have feasted on a weak schedule and a weak division. Winning a series is great, but if you always win two games and lose the third, you never go on a winning streak and you never build momentum over a stupidly long season. You're not going to win 109 games. The only time winning a series is really important is in the postseason.

So if he didn't pitch yesterday, he would have been available today? You want to be intentionally manipulative. Not happening. What do you mean manipulative? Stop going to a worse case scenario. I said if he didn't pitch Friday, not yesterday. I'm saying because he pitched Friday and yesterday, he wasn't available today. If he didn't pitch Friday he's available today for 3 outs. He only threw 6 pitches on Friday. I actually asked you that question earlier, but you didn't answer. You may not realize it, but this is manipulating the situation. I'm not talking about Friday. I'm talking about yesterday. He pitched in a non-save spot, with a four run lead. It's not as simple as you want it to be, just blaming Kolek. Other factors are always involved. Your argument makes zero sense. He only threw six pitches on Friday, so why wasn't he available today? Oh, because he threw yesterday, in a non-save spot. The pitch count doesn't matter, evidenced by Estrada and Peralta both being unavailable today.

Since we have a disagreement on whether or not you nail down a Series victory when it presents itself, we won't agree on yesterday. I'm sure Shildt was gun shy, so to speak, because of what happened on Friday, and didn't mess around and brought in Suarez on Saturday to close it out. That had to be the reason. He didn't need the work. Shildt wanted to be sure to get the Series win. I agree. To me, it's all about Friday. I happen to agree with Shildt when he brought in Suarez on Friday, and also to close out the Series win yesterday. You don't. Ok. Again, it shouldn't have come down to that, but Kolek crapped the bed. Bummer.

Again, it shouldn't have come down to that, but Kolek crapped the bed. Bummer. The idea of winning a series in perpetuity is stupid. Flat out. Shildt's obsession with that idea is equally stupid, it's nothing more than a feel good press conference talking point. Let's explain why. If you win eight out of ten series like they have, but you get swept by a bottom feeder and lose two of three in the remaining series, what are you? Assuming all three game series and ignoring potential scheduling issues: 24 games. 16-8. Sounds good, right? But then you lose five of six, so you're suddenly 17-13. Not quite that great. Now, let's say the inevitable happens over 162. You get hit with injuries. Maybe a rainout. The rotation gets mixed and matched, the schedule isn't as friendly and you lose three or four in a row. Now you're back to what you are, a .500 team. There is *no* substitute for a winning streak, no matter how many series you win. One losing streak can wipe out an entire month of series victories. The Padres are lucky the National League is hot garbage. There are ten teams below .500. If we weren't in the era of expanded playoffs, this would be a joke. I find it ironic that everyone was bitching about 82-80 last year and now we are celebrating winning series...while projected to be 83-79.

I just don't agree with you. If I didn't think winning a Series was important, then you have a point. I say you nail down that win yesterday, especially after the fiasco on Friday, and against a team who has a great winning record at home. Friday is all on Kolek. If he doesn't screw up, then Suarez isn't needed, and in turn, he closes it out today.

Winning a series ≠ Burning your closer in a non-save situation after you already burned Estrada in the same game. You essentially punted today because you misused four guys in the same game. It's not about agreeing with me, there's only one answer here that makes any sense. It's terrible process. The Royals are not good.

It absolutely is about not agreeing with you, and I feel there's only one answer, get the Series win. Secure those wins so you can get two out of three, at least. It all comes down to Kolek. If Kolek doesn't crap the bed so badly, we don't have this conversation, because we sweep the Royals. Suarez is available. You say I'm going out of my to blame Kolek, which I'm not, it's crystal clear that it's on him, and I say you're going out of your way to blame Shildt. You do that often. You have a tendency to blame a coach, before any players poor performance. The outcome of Fridays near debacle had to play a part in Shildt throwing Suarez yesterday, and I don't blame him. Secure that win yesterday, and you're guaranteed a Series victory. The Royals aren't good? Yes they are, especially at home. You don't mess around when you have two solid chances at victories against a good team at home.

Not really. Not this time of year. Why do you think it's not important to win a Series this time of year? Series wins just aren't relevant--no one (well, almost no one) cares how many series a team wins in a season. I have yet to see a "number of series wins" column in the standings. Fun fact: The Padres have won 11 series this season, while losing 6 and splitting 3. And yet...they are only 2 games above .500.

Ironic twist inbound: Everyone was bitching at 82-80 last season with the underperformance label. Now it's 2024 and the team is on an 83 win pace and everyone is celebrating winning eight out of ten series when they were swept by Colorado in the middle of it. It's sheer stupidity. Just like people who want to lay the entire series at the feet of Kolek and ignore the blinding mistakes Shildt made throughout all three games.

More importantly, stringing as many wins together as possible is the ultimate.

It's not applicable. It's simply a goal, to win every Series. It's not going to happen, but it's something to strive for. I don't lay the entire series at Kolek's feet, only for the outcome of today's game. Suarez pitches today if he doesn't crap the bed horribly, again.

Pretty contradictory for the second or third time in the last handful of posts. You just said you were happy winning two out of three...and it's hard to go on a winning streak if you can't manage a bullpen.

Correct--stringing WINS together is the ultimate. Winning 5 more series than they've lost this year has them at a lofty 2 games over .500. By the end of the season, that just may not be enough to get into the playoffs. But should they get into the playoffs, then...AND ONLY THEN...I'm happy with them winning series after series, as that's only time it's important.
