So...did anyone think that after 1/5 of the season, Profar would be the team leader (or close to it) in numerous offensive categories?

I thought it was going to be Graham Pauley. In all seriousness, good for Jurickson. It's a serious indictment on this offense that he's the best approach going right now.

This just in: Bullpens give up runs. Good offenses score more runs than bad bullpens give up … but that's hidden below the fold. Eventually, the millionaires populating the Padres offense will start getting their swings in sync again..

As disappointed as I've been thus far, I will give Shildt props for his gutsy choice to take a run off the board on the catcher interference, especially after the bases-loaded 0-outs gag earlier in the game. And I love the fact that Manny immediately rewarded him by clearing the bases.

I myself wouldn't have take a run off the board given this team's current O-woes.

A second run is highly unlikely to win the game in the fifth inning. A run in with two outs in that scenario is worth 0.3 runs, 1.3 with the run in hand. Bases loaded and one out is a 1.5 run expectancy. If you get nothing, the game isn't likely to end 1-0, anyway. It's an easy call to take the run off the board, all things equal.

Merrill is beginning to show some signs of weakness…and whether it’s injury related or not pitching coaches have taken notice. 0-14 going into today’s game. That’s one less offensive threat right now. I’ll be watching his ABs a little more closely today; the daytime start time could be beneficial for him if he gets to play…

Speaking of regression, JM added to his MLB leading homers given up total in the 1st today, sigh...

Maybe pitchers have made adjustments in pitching to Merrill. If so, it's up to Merrill and the coaches to make the necessary adjustments.

TG, Jr is talking about this right now. Regression to the mean is a good conjecture, so we'll just need to see how well Merrill can adjust to what he's seeing from pitching now. As TG says, the pitchers are testing him now. His focus get pushed now that he's slumping a little - will he swipe at a certain pitch or find a way to get to it, or just ignore it. Want to avoid the case where a pitcher knows that they can throw that one pitch that "he can't hit, but he can't lay off …"

Speaking of slumbers right now, Junior is really swiping through just about anything that looks like a baseball coming his direction … he's not making great swing decisions.
