The pitch recognition today is abysmal.

Padres, as usual, couldn't make a 5+ ERA pitcher look like one. Unbelievable. Quintana had given up 19 ER in his last four games before today. Come to Petco and pitch to the hapless Padres and he gets a QS.
And another bad call.

Jackson Effin Merrill Strikes Again!!!!! Unbelievable!!! ROY, no doubt!!! Walking it off against a New York team will always get you more recognition and publicity, especially given how well the Mets have been playing lately.

Newest Fanduel Rookie of the Year odds after JM's homer: Merrill -150 Skenes +110
Jake Peavy and the other talking head on MLB tonight are having a Jackson Merrill lovefest about how he should be the ROY and how the Padres wouldn't be making the playoffs without him. And how he also plays every day.
It's now his to lose.

People have to also remember, the guy just turned 21 years old in April!!! Incredible!!! I'm joining them in the Jackson Effin Merrill Love Fest, for sure!!!

Great story in "The Athletic" today about the connection between Darvish and AJ. He's known Yu since Darvish was in high school and according to Darvish's agent, AJ is closer to him than anyone in baseball.
So close that he offered to put Darvish on the IL for as long as Yu's personal matter needed tending to, so he could still get paid. But Darvish didn't feel it would be fair to the relationship he had with Peter Seidler when he got his most recent contract. So he did something NO ONE in professional sports did: he decided to voluntarily turn down his salary while being away from the Padres. He saved the Padres about $4M.
AJ called him at least once a week, usually more, to talk to him about baseball but mostly to see how he was doing. The story shows what both of these guys are made of. I think Yu's going to come back strong for a team that collectively supported and missed him while he was gone.

I hope Yu's brother is ok, and I just became an even bigger fan of Yu, and AJ.

I'm originally from St. Louis but been out here for 44 years. For decades the Cardinals have been good and the fans appreciate it. They have been dubbed "the best fans in MLB" by a variety of announcers and by the St. Louis fans themselves. Mostly they get that because they cheer good plays and players from both teams.
But the truth is, they show up when the Cardinals win and bitch when they don't. Take a look at the paltry crowd with the Cardinals around .500. The fans are spoiled and aren't any better than any other place when their team is winning. The real example has always been the Chicago Cubs. They lost for decades but fans kept showing up.
