It seems to be working okay. In SD they have the Open Division, which takes the 4 best teams and pits them in their own 4 team playoff. Both semis in the Open Division went into OT; the Final came down to the last play of the game. This year’s Open Champion lost to MV in the SoCal State playoffs. The rest of us play in 12 team brackets. 1-4 get the first round bye. You get some blowouts in the first round. The 5 vs 12 matchup is generally not pretty. We are pretty competitive in D3, losing a heartbreaker in the semis 3 years ago w a young team. Thought we were sitting pretty for the following season, but they bumped us up to D2 where quarterfinals is as far as we’ve been able to advance. The upper level of D2 is pretty stout for our little farts. And then you have teams like St. Aug, who have been able to supercharge up the ranks. Wonder where Gladnick is gonna end up. Definitely a messy separation. How about Eastlake as a landing spot? 🤔

How's that working in San Diego? In the Southern Section it's fine except at D1 as far as competitive balance. With the exception of Servite with their generational class, it's all Mater Dei & Bosco in the finals annually. The semifinals are running clock blowouts. They basically punish good teams who had outstanding seasons by placing them in a bracket with two schools who have about 40 D1 guys each. For example, San Clemente beat Mission Viejo for the South Coast League title putting them in D1 instead of MV. SC gets body bagged by Bosco in D1 first round while MV wins D2 enroute to a state title. Same thing happens in NorCal… Didn't DLS, Folsom and Serra play in separate state games? Are they no longer the top three in Nor Cal?

Schools like Bosco and MD are so deep that even our own 4 star DB recruit from Bosco barely saw the field during meaningful minutes. For example, San Clemente beat Mission Viejo for the South Coast League title putting them in D1 instead of MV. The upper level of D2 is pretty stout for our little farts. That sounds a lot more competitive at the top. D2 in the SS gets the best games between programs with 5-6 D1 guys like MV and Servite. D1 should just be a Mater Dei / Bosco rematch or just a top 4 and force them to play each other in one semi. That way D2 gets even more competitive. And there's no annual repeat in the finals in D1 It's really off-balance when 5 of the 6 schools in a single league take up 5 of 8 spots in D1. Then its worst team goes to the D2 finals.

The talent level in the SS is just staggering. I look at the ratings from CalPreps for the top level teams in SD, who would hang 50 on us if we played them, and then I look at the elite teams in the SS and they are rated 30-40 pts higher, 😬
