Indeed. I'm actually struggling to tamp down my "stupid" positivity, lest I be tossed into a "camp" for Panglossians. It must be Bizarro World day on the mesa.... "... this most foul, strange, and unnatural." ---Hamlet's father's ghost

So who, if anybody, does Lewis keep from the current coaching staff?

Better get an OL coach that can really recruit - would OL be impressed if the Aztecs could bring in Kyle Turley as an OL coach
Coach Lewis really has to get going on the Portal - putting together a staff - HS recruiting
a quick hot lava mess on the mesa

That’s not the coaches salary pool but the whole staff budget. Apples and oranges. The staff makes $1.2M? Was the staff budget included in last season's $2.5M? Lewis is getting $1.753M year one with $100K more with each subsequent year. Realignment could change that but the article doesn't say whether that would mean a jump to the P4 or into the P2. Gotta think its the former. No… the other poster was trying to say that the $3.7m includes coaches and folks like Adam Hall who is not a coach, but is football staff…

So who, if anybody, does Lewis keep from the current coaching staff? I would say Deakin stands the best chance to be retained. After that, who knows?

They did move quickly which surprised me. Wicker had a list halfway through the season. Lewis' fallout with Sanders was well known so JD could have had his eye on him for a long time. He did mention Moosebrugger in the press conference, no doubt he factored into this as well

And, you just contradicted yourself. You want to get a good OL coach who is also good at recruiting. Turley has zero coaching experience and zero recruiting experience. If he wants to come on as a volunteer assistant OL coach, great!

According to the UT Sean Lewis ran a 3-3-5 defense while head coach at Kent State.

May not be D1 experience, but Turley has been coaching at the high school and JC ranks. He was OL coach for Craft at RCC for a stint.

According to the UT Sean Lewis ran a 3-3-5 defense while head coach at Kent State. The "335" that Kent state ran when he was there was very different than the one Rocky and his proteges run. I've said it before and I'll say it again. The 335 is simply an alignment. The one that Kent St ran pressured very little and had the nose two gap a lot. Rocky's version brought pressure from somewhere on every play. Hell last season he ran cover 0 on 25% of plays which is unheard of. The reason he and Joe Lee Dunn created it was because 1.) they couldn't get the depth and talent to run a 4-man front so they chose to get smaller but quicker DL who are one gap players who could shoot gaps, stunt, and in some cases cover to cause havoc 2.) with a 3-man front you have at least one rusher coming from somewhere else than the DL and the OL doesn't know from where so it creates difficulties blocking it both in the run and the pass 3.) by exchanging a DL for a DB (434 to 335) you increase the overall speed of the defense 4.) It's a lot easier to find good DB's versus good DL 5.) the extra DB increases flexibility to drop a safety (aztec) into the box to help with the run. The entire formation was designed so as to induce pressure against the offense to 1) stop the run and 2.) to force errant throws that either fall incomplete or are intercepted. I've talked to Rocky about it and he told me if he could get the type of DL the SEC gets (over 70% of NFL DL are from the south) he'd probably run a mixture of 3-man and 4-man fronts. By the way a couple of times against the service academies he did use a 4-man front. It's tough to use the 335 alignment with the types of players a non-P4 school can get and then play a read and react type of defense. It usually never works - witness Kent St with Lewis, UNR a couple of years ago, and the defenses that Rich Rod ran at Michigan and AZ.

Not sure where this should go.. This is the true definition of "hitting the ground running." Recruiting on the first official day on the job. I'm getting more and more excited by this choice.

He just offered the QB who committed to him at CU and decommited from them just prior to Lewis's announcement?! Great start!

Unless as the best talent can "get paid", they won't "be paid" at SDSU.
It's nice to think that there are a bunch of whales out there who can "pump up the donations", but in reality?
They can't even give their tickets away right now. Hopefully, they did not wait too long to make these changes. Sure glad they got a new stadium out of all of this, however. The Aztec teams of the past decade did that. The next generation now needs to make that effort count.

The Veer and Shoot? Crazy, we better find an actual quarterback that actually has a real arm reeeeeeeal quick if our slot guys are going to be lining up in gucci row. agree. without knowing the full candidate pool i don't hate it, but it doesn't scream "we had people knocking down our door". Well it is known as “the cradle of coaches”

This guys energy, passion, and desire are off the charts. I harken back to our/my head coach … Doug Scovil. You could never find more polar opposites. Coach Scovil, with all due respect, should’ve never been a head coach.
