I'd be very happy with a Bol Bol type player. Light on his feet for his height, play inside or out He kinda reminds me of the Jay Pal highlights I’ve seen. Plus - he reminds me a little of KD. Calm down … I’m not saying he’s anywhere near that type of player. But … He’s very tall, very thin but both athletic and skilled … can put the ball on the floor, has mid-range and 3 ball touch, can shoot over guys, can post up and do some things, and can finish at the rack. On D he can block guys shooting jumpers and can come from the weak side and swat shots. I’m intrigued by his potential and excited he’s coming into the program. Now … go get a 1 year 7 foot center that plays D, is a block threat, rebounds and has some smarts, athleticism and toughness. We will be fully loaded if/when that happens. Your scouting report is based on … 30 seconds of video and one write up? I would be shocked if this kid didn’t redshirt. I would actually be surprised if he ever plays meaningful minutes for us. I understand the coaches have to take flyers on bigs and hope some develop, but there’s a reason this kid was virtually unknown. He was a mediocre wing who grew 5-6 inches in the last 2 years, so now he’s 6’11 with mediocre wing skills. I hope I’m wrong but this definitely seems like a “hopefully he becomes something in 3 years project” or obviously the next KD.

Being recruited by Villanova, USC and Saint Mary’s isn't someone who's "virtually unknown". Some bigs blow up later than wings or guards, especially when they have late growth spurts. Being perceived as one of the "standouts" at Pangos doesn't scream unknown either. I agree that he's likely to RS, and that's fine. Give him a chance to grow into his body. Heide is more developed. But I think it's a good possibility he grows into a Nate-type talent over time, and I'd take that in a heartbeat. His stroke, albeit a while back, is very clean & solid. What we don't know is how well he runs the floor, given the growth spurt, and how well he knows the game from a post/big perspective? Hence why I think a RS is warranted/likely. But if Dutch thinks there's a chance, even a slight one, that he could contribute this year that tells me he's not as far behind as some may think. You can count on 1 hand the # of players Dutch has recruited who didn't end up in the rotation at one point. Chang, Joel Mensah, Evans, and Dinwiddie, and Evans was more as a favor to Acker, given his history, than anything. It's possible MG ends up being a Joel Mensah, but I think it's more likely he ends up closer to Nate.

the most difficult HS players to evaluate are the Bigs - takes them longer to get to their true potential as they do not always get to play against players their own size

I have no idea if he is going to be mediocre, good, great, etc… but wow!!! The kid is very, very young, one to two years younger than other recruits… if you are young and growing 3-4 inches per year it is going to be hard to be super productive… I was told that they expect him to, at the least, be able to guard 1-5

He will get definitely get minutes. Nobody should be giving this guy comps. Gwath is so under the radar that nobody knows what he going to be.

His HS coach rates him as " oozing with talent - just scratching the surface " with incredible POTENTIAL " rather guess on how that translates to actual College abilities maybe we wait to see how far along he really is at the college level after he enrolls at SDSU and competes against Ledee and other Aztecs

What I do know is that he'll be an Aztec next year...rather than being a redshirt for another team or at a prep school...working his way to be "on the radar"...
It only costs us a scholarship for one year if he's a bust...but if he's legit...then we got ourselves a real steal...the coaches now get an opportunity to see him in practice every day...they'll figure it out who the "real" MG is very quickly.

Exactly
Coaches saw enough 'potential" to offer him a scholarship so as with many freshmen you know a whole lot more once the coaches have the opportunity to work with him .

There has to be some decent footage of young Magoon playing bball out there somewhere, right? Other than one mid-range jumper clip I have seen nada.

I specifically said I wasn’t saying he was KD or that he’d ever be- just that the highlights I’ve seen and his size/build and type of athleticism reminded me of both Jay Pal and KD. Plus the fact that he had other big time programs after him means that your pessimism and criticism of him is wrong. Plus, I trust Dutcher. Sounds like you really do not. I probably watched 10 minutes of video of him playing - not 30 seconds. Also I wouldn’t call what I wrote up a “scouting report” … you can’t do a “scouting report” off of any highlight video. But hey, if you can’t read, or understand what I said … and just want to go on a rant and be negative … you do you.

would guess the thought is how can people realistically compare a HS Big that has not consistently played against solid competition with players his own size - and say he is similar to KD -
maybe Jay Pal but then again he has not played against top competition either
maybe fans at least wait until Aztec practices have begun and there is some better players to try to evaluate either M G or even Jay Pal -
Either or both could be decent players but wait on judgement

His shot is buttery smooth. Incredibly high ceiling for this kid.

would guess that there might be more reports about MG and the other newer players now that SS 2 has begun

Believe Zeigler reported that M G was injured during practice and will be out for at least a couple of months - so even more likely that he will red shirt
Not sure if the report has been posted here

Didn't he get shut down, and is having foot surgery? Any updates on his health? www.sandiegouniontribune.com/sports/aztecs/story/2023-08-09/san-diego-state-sdsu-aztecs-basketball-magoon-gwath-freshman-ankle-surgery-coaching-retreat-steve-fisher Incoming freshman Magoon Gwath had surgery to repair a fracture in his right ankle and is out two to three months, likely meaning the promising 6-foot-11¾ forward from Dallas will redshirt.
Gwath played on the ankle for the first few weeks of summer workouts and showed flashes of his prodigious talents for someone his size, making step-back 3s or driving into the lane and Euro-stepping with his long legs through a tangle of players for an easy basket. Then X-rays revealed a fracture, and he was immediately shut down.
“Having talked to the doctors,” coach Brian Dutcher said, “even though he was out here playing on it, they just felt he was one twist or turn away from really fracturing it to the point where he couldn’t do anything. Out of an abundance of caution and knowing that Magoon is a long-term guy in the program, we wanted to make sure we get him healthy.”
Gwath was a late addition to the roster, committing on June 25 after initially intending to spend a post-grad year with Veritas Prep in the Los Angeles area. He grew up in the Dallas area and attended his first three years of high school there before transferring to Veritas Prep last season.
“He’s oozing with potential, just scratching the surface,” Veritas Prep coach George Zedan said in June. “You have essentially a 7-footer who can shoot the 3, is a willing passer and can actually handle the basketball. That’s obviously very, very unique. … The only thing holding him back now is he has to get stronger
