As the coaches have seen it is ot that easy to Sign a player that is 6'10" or larger - especially with NIL money getting into the situation - so would guess the Coaches made their move to get a player that actually wants to come to SDSU

Justin Landry, SDSU strength and conditioning coach at San Diego State has his work cut out for him.

Isn't the kid still 17? I don't think he's ever going to look like LeDee, but he'll grow into his frame the next couple years.

Light on his feet for his height, play inside or out Except for the part about him getting injured after just 9 games at Oregon & leaving for the draft.... I'm hoping for a mix of Jalen McD & Nate, but that's a long ways off. The fact he was smaller & played a little more away from the hoop before the growth spurt should help.

Future KD? I doubt Gwath plays anything other than the 5 or 4, so probably not

True, but if he's really only 190 there's no way he can really defend the 5 next year. Needs a redshirt year Most likely. Definitely he or Heide. Redshirting him would give 2 years separation between he & Shay, so both would have a path to starting. Curious to see where Heide fits in all this? Do they envision him as the future Ledee & Gwath as the future Nate in 2-3 years? Doesn't close the door on a 1-year GT. just did a quick check in… was told they think he can defend 1-5… would be nice

Jalen McD was able to get his playing weight up at SDSU, came in around 185 left at a slightly bigger 200lb, and gained another 5-10 lbs in NBA. Not sure if Malik gained that much muscle as did McD. Zylan did take advantage of the weight room, but was forced to RS that Frosh season.
Assume this kid can add 10-15lbs in a few year years, but he is pencil thin now at 17. (Same stage as Myles Bird.)

correct I was also going to suggest J . McD as someone who was able to add some strength to his body while at SDSU and has progressed in the NBA
did he also red shirt a season at SDSU ?
Jay Pal is coming in this season - also a player with a fairly slim frame

Jay Pal is coming in this season - also a player with a fairly slim frame McD arrived and RS'ed. Jay Pal is 23 years old, and Magoon Gwath is 17. Pal has the summer of his GTR year to bulk up, and Gwath will have a couple of years. or more. Justin Landry knows his role, his job and appears to be good at it.

Where and how did he get the idea of going there? So now he did the same about being present for this signing. Truly, under the radar.

Nathan is from Ghana and believe Dutcher and the staff have a solid relationship with a gentleman that assists guys in coming to the US especially to play Basketball - Nathan went to Findley Prep HS
AG family escaped from Sudan not sure if there is a contact person that assists guys / families coming to the US and if Dutcher has any special contacts - but now there is a good one with AG
Numerous schools have coaches / recruiters who do set up connections with other countries - similar to what St Mary's has done with guys from Australia and numerous other schools have done
Zags used to have a good connection or two to some European countries but that coach is now the HC at Arizona
When players have good experiences or bad they do chat with other players

At this point if you’re an African born player or your parents were born in Africa, whether it be Ghana, Sudan, Uganda, Mali, you know SDSU has a great history with African born players and there’s a culture and brotherhood at SDSU that African born players have really found enjoyable.
Dutcher said this in 2021, “ “I like the attitude they bring,” Dutcher says of his international contingent. “They’re good kids and they’re about the right things. They have a different work ethic sometimes. They’re all very grateful for the things they have. If we give them a good meal, they’re not saying, ‘I wanted a better one.’ They’re always appreciative.
“We’re not a real ‘entitlement’ program. When they come here, maybe that’s why they function so well because this program is not about entitlement. You get what you earn. Maybe to a degree, they’re suited to this program.”

Where and how did he get the idea of going there? So now he did the same about being present for this signing. Truly, under the radar. I am fairly sure that Kwaku Amoaku brought some of the players to Coach Dutcher's attention. Kwaku Amoaku was an assistant coach at Miramar College and a San Marcos High School graduate. His roots also hail from Ghana. Born to Ghanaian parents, he founded an African Youth Basketball Organization. Joel Mensah from J. Serra High School signed first, and Nathan after that. Nathan was at Findlay Prep in Henderson, Nevada. They both shared the same last name but did not share any family ties. However, they knew each other. Also in the Aztecs’ 2018 recruiting class, was Adelanto High School 6’2″ SG, Jordan Campbell (who decommitted, went to Oregon State, transferred to Fresno State, and is currently in the portal. Add Ed Chang who was a late addition to SDSU last June after initially committing to Washington but never signing a letter of intent. He moved to the Seattle area and lived with a brother, intending to finish his high school career there. But the state federation never cleared him, and he sat out his senior season. Chang reopened his recruitment and became the fourth incoming SDSU first-year student with African heritage. Like fellow Aztec forward Aguek Arop, Chang grew up in the large South Sudanese community in Omaha, Neb., twice an all-state selection from Papillion-La Vista High. As an Aztec, Chang struggled defensively, and the coaches admitted they approached him about redshirting shortly before the season. Chang said no. Aguek Arop went from Omaha South in 2016-17 to San Diego State in 2018-19 by way of The Skill Factory (Prep School) near Atlanta. The story per Nebraska Press was, Time Miles (HC Nebraska) gave every opportunity for Arop to work out with the Huskers. When it became painfully obvious that Arop was not a P5 prospect (“people who think he is are out of their minds”), Miles tried to shop Arop around to different programs to give Arop a chance to play somewhere. Miles was brutally honest with Arop in this situation. He gave him the chance to head to prep school and join the 2018 class and Arop did not like this idea but went anyways. At the time the Aztecs had their eyes on a 6'6" PG named Both Gach (also Sudanese) from Arizona Compass Prep. His recruitment came down to the Aztecs and Utah. We went to Utah. Then the NCAA slapped the Utah men’s basketball program with two years probation and numerous other penalties for recruiting violations over seven days in April 2018 regarding an unidentified player (Both Gach.) Gach visited SDSU a week later and orally committed to Utah on June 1. Krystkowiak was not directly implicated, other than for a failure to promote an atmosphere of compliance and properly monitor his staff. The Aztecs settled on Chang and Arop, Arop was listed at 6'5" 175, and played combo guard & wing, while Chang was 6'8 and was an outside shooter. Arop and Chang are Sudanese while Joel and Nathan have roots in Ghana. Neither Mensahs do NOT have any ties to Nebraska. Isn't the kid still 17? I don't think he's ever going to look like LeDee, but he'll grow into his frame the next couple years. I'd be very happy with a Bol Bol type player. Light on his feet for his height, play inside or out He kinda reminds me of the Jay Pal highlights I’ve seen. Plus - he reminds me a little of KD. Calm down … I’m not saying he’s anywhere near that type of player. But … He’s very tall, very thin but both athletic and skilled … can put the ball on the floor, has mid-range and 3 ball touch, can shoot over guys, can post up and do some things, and can finish at the rack. On D he can block guys shooting jumpers and can come from the weak side and swat shots. I’m intrigued by his potential and excited he’s coming into the program. Now … go get a 1 year 7 foot center that plays D, is a block threat, rebounds and has some smarts, athleticism and toughness. We will be fully loaded if/when that happens.

Funny … hadnt seen the other KD mention above. I DO think KD is good “comp” to explain Magoon’s game based on the highlight video. But I’m NOT saying he is or can be as good as KD.

as most know taller players can take a while to convert/adjust their HS game to the college game - especially since they do not regularly play against taller quality players
In addition not exactly the best thing for the player saying a player is similar to player X or Y or Z they all have different skill levels - Realize that we all want to have the thought of how he fits in or compares to others - give it some time
Maybe we wait until players get on campus and start playing against current Aztec players and we hear from the coaches or those attending the practices . Hope Magoon is able to register for SS 2 get involved in practices . Not sure if he will be able to participate in the Swish League but even that has a different flavor then true college basketball
