To me, Ted seems to find a way to make himself the story far too often during a broadcast. Some people like that, I can’t stand it. Larry king was famous for his interview skills whereas he tried to avoid the words “I, me, and my” in an attempt to not be the focus of the interview. Ted’s broadcasts seem to be about Ted as he uses “I, me and my” with regularity. I don’t turn on the game to learn about Ted’s life or points of view, I turn on the game to hear the game. I understand that styles are different and some people enjoy hearing about other things during the game. Bill Walton fans are of this style. I’m more of the Vin Scully, Nick Nixon type. Paint the picture with your words and allow me to imagine the game being broadcast. The big difference with Bill Walton is you can see the game and follow what’s going on even if he’s telling a story. His style would never work on the radio cause you’d never be able to follow along.

Long past time to go. I wasn't a big fan of his basketball calls when he was in his prime. Now it's painful to listen to. He was much better calling Padres games with Jerry Coleman. agreed he is awful. No idea how he became so revered That’s because you are a millennial. Minimal work, maximum expectations and no respect for those who’ve gone before you. Ted has put in the he work for years and years, that’s worth something.

Very big east coast Bias. I’m still bitter they fired Dave Campbell for him. I think the biggest tell of his ability is that after 4o+ years he has no iconic call. Jerry Coleman does, matty v, don and mud, even hacksaw all had iconic calls. Ted none

Ron reina was better, hacksaw was better, Dave Campbell was better, all of the padres tv guys were soo much better. I can still hear Coleman’s call in 84, hacksaw in Pittsburg in 94, what calls has ted made? Orsillo has made more impact in 5 years than ted in 45

I listened for over 1 quarter in the football game before ted every gave the score of the pads game he was announcing Ted has always been too negative and too egoistical, complete opposite of col Coleman

He's "turrible". I was at SDSU in the late 70's when Ted showed up. He was walking around campus one day talking smack to anybody who would engage. He thought he was all that coming from Philly, to small market SD. My roommate got into it with him that day. His broadcasts were always about him and his divorces. The greats never did that. Chick only mentioned Marge when he wanted to say nice things about her. Ron Reina was a lot better!

Because I am getting pretty old, or maybe already am pretty old, I go way back with Ted. To when he was the Ch. 8 sports guy with Michael Tuck and Allison Ross. But, his call, of the 4 I just listened to, was definitely the weakest. Even the FAU guy was better IMO, even though he wasn't excited that Lamont made the buzzer beater. But, why is it that I love a spanish guy calling an exciting moment in sports? I vote for Pedro...err, Rafael.

Listening to Leitner’s call vs. the FAU broadcaster reminded me of the old 1970’s Saturday AM school house rock “interjection song.”
“………or by a comma when the feelings not as strong.”

I love Ted's play by play. I don't get the negativity. He doesn't sound like anyone else. He's got his own style and has a great on air personality. I love his work. Always have. Sorry but he is a terrible play by play guy and age isn't helping.

Sorry but he is a terrible play by play guy and age isn't helping. He is right and truly awful, compounded by the fact that he can't see well anymore. You just don't get a visual picture of the game action from him, or at least not a remotely accurate one. However, in recognition for Uncle Teddy's years of service, no real harm in having him be a guest color man from time to time. His best work was in the color capacity when Jerry Coleman was PBP for the Padres.

Channel 7/39 last night at 11;30 had a few of the calls of the end of the game - so you can compare some of the announcers - included was the announcer who normally does the GOALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL call
remember this is not having to make a choice between Ted and Hacksaw but maybe Jon S or others from 760 AM

Ted has put in the he work for years and years, that’s worth something. I'm not a millennial. I'm a year older than the oldest boomer. I'll never forget that for much of Teds career as the Aztec broadcaster he always refer to "your Aztecs." He would worry about the game getting over early enough for him to catch his plane. He always was expecting that big network job in New York City. Nid play be play never was good. I even quit taking my radio to the games. Ron Reina now and forever "The Voice of the Aztecs."

Hey IDIOTS...
We're going to play in the NCAA Tourney championship tonight and all you can do is disparage a member of our team (yes...Ted is a member of the Aztec "team")...
Plenty of time for your negativity in the off-season...now is the time to support our team...
Sorry...I don't want to hear your whining, bitching, or complaining about any member of our team...

I can remember Uncle Teddy coming to town way back when, I can even remember a good buddy of mine almost getting into a fight with Teddy in the bathroom at the Rodeo bar in La Jolla (flashback!) when he first arrived. I always felt like what AzTex said, that Ted was always thinking he was too good for San Diego and was waiting for that next Big Job in The Big City somewhere better then San Diego. Was never a big fan of his just kind felt like he was different then the others but over time he became VERY irritating as a news caster and then even worse as a game broadcaster, he always hit me as a fill-in until they could find someone else. He just never got replaced by the Aztecs and stayed around long enough to become part of the program. I never felt he was really part of the team just kind of follow them around and did HIS SHTICK, more about him then the team but over time you just kind of looked past it and accepted him as Uncle Teddy, that crazy uncle on your mom side no one really liked but was kinda funny. (How many divorces did we hear about from him?) Teddy had his moments in San Diego but nothing really tying him to SDSU in a true standout moment or something where he really truly became part of the program at San Diego State. He was just there doing the play by play following the team waiting to get to his next game (where ever that was). He always seemed like he was looking forward to being done and off to something big and better somewhere else.

The MWC has a video on their YouTube channel interviewing Ted called Four it all: pregame talk with Ted Leitner. One thing is the MWC channel should turn comments on. My memories start with games at Petersen Gym with Tim Vezie coaching Eddie Gordon and Eddie Morris and others in the late 1970s and the AZTECS band playing Jesus Christ Superstar song to games at the Sports Arena with the all-time home attendance record of 13,106 against North Carolina wishing for an on-campus basketball arena and the memories inside Viejas Arena. Then AZTECS playing and winning before 73,000+ fans in the Final Four. This program is in the top 10 in the country.

no one is saying is not a true Aztec forever
But he as are some other very good announcers to reach a time when their broadcasts start to slip . Many do retire rather then being asked to retire - some are very good ones -
Just saying this could be a great time to do it .
