Houston beat Memphis with a buzzer beater. I enjoy buffer beaters except when they are versus the Aztecs, but ...
Houston player drove then pushed the defender (not full arm extension, but clearly an arm extension) to create ~3 feet of space between him and the defender before shooting.
Fouls in the last seconds of a game are rare (just look at Arop getting mugged under the hoop at the end of the Arkansas game). Offensive fouls are even more rare. In this case the defender was there until pushed away. There is no way the Houston player gets that shot off without committing the foul.
I see fouls committed in many of the buzzer beaters. Sometimes they are extreme and directly result in the win. Other times, such as our game against Arkansas, it only increased the odds of a buzzer beater.
In my view, if the foul was necessary to win the game, it should be called. With this criteria, I would not have called a foul on Arop getting pushed out of bounds on the rebound versus Arkanssa but would have called the foul on the Houston player.
Houston did not win that game as much as the referees gave Houston the win.
