Alabama men's basketball recently had a player shoot and kill someone, which happened after he texted one of his teammates to retrieve the gun and bring it to him (which he did). The player who retrieved the murder weapon for him has continued to play, and is one of the team's top scorers. His coaches don't seem to think that he did anything wrong so there's no reason to suspend him. During starting lineup introductions for their last home game, he ran out on the court and his teammates patted him down as if he was being arrested. Totally classless and basically flipping the bird to the rest of the country.
Meanwhile, NMSU continues to get harshly criticized over the Peake incident. Peake has not been charged, and unless something drastic is uncovered in the ongoing investigations, will not be charged. NM State Police have already publicly said that he was acting in self defense. His only crime was possession of a firearm on the UNM campus, which is a misdemeanor. He also broke team rules by having the gun on an official road trip, but that's an internal discipline matter, not a criminal matter. The three UNM students who participated in the ambush have all been charged.
This just goes to show the disparity between the way P5 schools are treated as compared to Mid Majors. If the Alabama incident had happened at any mid major, rest assured it would be much bigger national news than it has been.
We obviously have bigger messes to clean up at NMSU after the Greg Heiar train wreck, but fortunately his lack of oversight as the head coach of that program got uncovered quickly and they were able to move to get rid of him before he even completed his first season. Everyone at NMSU is worried now about the potential for the NCAA to get involved. Hopefully they stay out of it and let the admins clean up their own mess.
It's like we joke over on our board - the NCAA was so mad at Kansas that they put Cleveland State on probation.
