Been a Clipper fan & season tix holder since the Sports Arena days and SDSU Aztec's since Peterson Gym. Love what Kawhi has done for SDSU Basketball and surely a HOF, but getting very, very frustrated with Kawhi. Either your good to play or your not. If you're good to go then play the damn game. If not WTH is the injury? This load management is a load of S#*T!. Its the first three games of the season, AFTER TAKING ALL OF LAST YEAR OFF, has played in two GAMES and sits for almost the entire first half (while PHX runs up a 20 pt. lead), final line(s) 21 minutes, 14 & 11 pts. It's a bad look period. Where is the desire and want to?? Enough to make me root for LBJ (at least he plays).

It was reported he needs to strengthen the ligaments or whatever it is with his injury. He is not able to play every night because it could potentially re-injure the knee. It is just a load management to help him build the leg back up. By mid season he will be back and playing quite a bit. This is the new NBA for you and probably for the best for athletes.
Also, it was reported we can expect the Clippers will have some losses and experience some frustration but they will be READY and RESTED for the playoffs.
Not saying that I agree or even have an opinion but it just seems that is what the league has evolved.
Just goes to show how amazing players like LeBron are and I am not really a huge LeBron fan.

The load management isn't for the recent ACL injury, it is for the Quad Tendinopathy that he has had since he played at San Antonio. Not sure of the actual dynamics of the condition, whether he is more anatomically inclined to develop the tendinopathy. but it has been an issue since 2018.

I intently watched him play throughout his career; I love the guy and he is far and away one of the best players I have ever seen (on the level of Magic, Bird, MJ and LBJ). When he was with SA, and they won it all, I thought he was overused and could understand that he was getting exhausted (40+ minutes a game with the ball in his hands nearly every time down the court). But now? . . . all I know is he doesn't seem to have any limitations when he is out there. He just took a whole year off. He is accepting coming off the bench . . . while the team is getting smoked and down by 20? Maybe start the game after having just warmed up and keep pace for the first 5-10 minutes instead of coming in off the bench cold (having just sat for 45 minutes), down by 20 and having to exert all that energy to try to get back into the game. That seems like "overload" or "mis-load" management to me. As an Aztec, I am tired of making excuses for the guy (which I have to do to all the time to my Laker fan buddies). If you can't play because of tendinitis or whatever (see Bernard King), then call it a career (with over $250M in earnings) cause right now your are embarrassing yourself. JMO

The surest way to get injured is to be afraid of getting injured and that is the way he is playing now

JMO I understand being disappointed if you’re a fan who purchased tickets to see him play and he didn’t so he could rest. I don’t understand your comfort opining on how best he should be used, considering it’s his health and body. Certainly, I think he’d know best whether coming off the bench matters. And regarding “defending him,” you literally don’t have to. He doesn’t seem worried about anybody’s perception of him. You really don’t need to be worried about it.

It’s the beginning of the season in the 1 sport where the regular season is mostly meaningless. For teams expected to make the playoffs it’s often better to just manage guy’s playing time and just get into the playoffs and take it from there. The NBA playoffs are such a grind that the teams who push for excellent records in the regular season are often gassed during the playoffs.

I get part of it, I had tickets for the Clippers @ Kings game over the weekend and was bummed to see Kawhi on the injury report.
For this season specifically he's ramping back up after being away for a full season, but simply put he's an injury prone player. Might as well minimize risk during the regular season to ensure that he's available for the playoffs for when it matters.
Unfortunately not everyone can have the longevity that LBJ has.

With teams all across the NBA embracing "load management" maybe that's a sign that there are too many regular season games and the league should trim the schedule by about 15%... thus every game would be a bit more meaningful ("stars" more likely to play) and it would add some additional rest into the schedule for the players who apparently need it so much.

KL was never injured as an aztec. Pashaad Penny was never injured as an aztec. Donnel Pumphrey was never injured as an aztec. Maybe they should hire Adam Hall as their personal trainer. He seemed to keep them healthy and they've all been terribly injury prone after leaving sdsu.

I'd add MLB to that as well.

No game is meaningless at $200 plus per ticket. If you "expect to make the playoffs" then you probably won't. You can "rest" when you have a 10 game lead and home court advantage. You need a day off then okay.

If you think about, the NBA (and all pro sports) are simply a form of entertainment. Whenever you hear "load management" pretty much everyone immediately thinks Kawhi Leonard. I completely understand how he wants to extend his career as long as possible and be healthy for the NBA playoffs, but this philosophy is in direct conflict of providing entertainment to the fans. Why? Because I would usually go up to LA a few times a year to watch the Kawhi play for the Clippers. Now I am reluctant to do so because there is a good chance he may sit out to rest. People are paying good money, well in advance, to see the best in the league. I get it if he just recovered from an injury, but he sat out all of last season (has been recovering for 16 months).

I understand it from both sides, but am inclined to side with the fans and think it's lame to baby yourself so much. I do see it from his perspective also of course, and if you can get away with it then why wouldn't you? I think it's more of a system issue than a player issue. The NBA needs to change up the playoff format IMO
I think they should make 4 or 5 divisions in each conference and make it so the division winners make the playoffs, and have 2 or 3 wildcard spots, similar how baseball & football does it. You'd be a lot more inclined to play to win if you had to win your division. I'm not a fan of just the 8 teams with the best record in each conference making the playoffs. It's also too many teams, I'd lower it to 6 each side

I do see it from his perspective also of course, and if you can get away with it then why wouldn't you? I think it's more of a system issue than a player issue. The NBA needs to change up the playoff format IMO I think they should make at least more division in each conference and make it so the division winners make the playoffs, and have 1 or 2 wildcard spots, just like how baseball does it. You'd be a lot more inclined to play to win if you had to win your division I think it's a very complicated issue. The (false) narrative around which sports are designed is that winning the "championship" is the ultimate goal. In the NBA, there's not a large enough benefit to being the best regular season team, but at some point that will just be a result of the type of sport it is. In baseball, you'd have to play a 75-game series to get the same rate of better seeded team winning the playoff series that then NBA gets with a 7-game series. It won't happen and there's nothing baseball can do to fix that. The playoffs have never been about proving who is the best. It's just a tournament we all have agreed to believe matters, when really it's no more than a few rolls of the dice at varying odds. But that's not a fun way to live your life. As fans, we can choose not to care about who wins the championship, stop viewing en masse, start staying home and spending our money elsewhere when the stars don't play regular season games, but that's in direct contradiction to the narrative we've all been sold. Without the fake importance of winning that trophy, being a 'fan' of any team gets pretty silly. Ultimately, the leagues aren't doing anything with the fans interests in mind, anyway. They are run by the money. I've given up the notion that they'll ever do anything for the benefit of the fans, and my boycotting buying tickets to see the Padres, or Clippers in the hopes of seeing Kawhi, etc., is really only punishing myself. So, personally, I endeavor to enjoy the experience whenever I watch a single game, overall consequences be damned. I'm not doing great with that, but I really don't know what else there is to do. The only thing I'm sure of is the foolishness in being 100% sure either side of the discussion is wrong.

Trim the schedule? Never going to happen with the amount of money involved for the owners and players. Heck, just look at the NFL, they just added a regular season game and reduced one pre-season game. There is just way too much money involved for both owners and players to think about. I bet most players would say they wouldn't want the games reduced if it meant a reduction in salaries. They prefer this method and it gives the younger players more opportunity. Overall, I would mostly agree with you but way too much money is impacting those decisions.

This is the exact reasoning I'd present in favor of Kawhi not "coasting" or being a baby about it. We'll never know, of course, but it just doesn't seem like he's the type to be coasting in a low pressure environment for the sake of the money. I can't imagine he likes watching games from the bench, no matter how much he's being paid for it.

That's why he wasn't injured as an Aztec. a decade of playing at the very highest level will wear on your body. Give him a break, if the CLIPPERS win a championship this season it will be worth it.
