Combined no-hitter for Ft Wayne against Dayton tonight. Merrill not in the lineup. I really like Iriarte.

What kind of hitter will he be at the major league level? If you were going to make a trade deadline trade, and you were going to trade (let's just say) Grisham + (Merrill or Salas), which prospect would you trade?

He just got promoted to San Antonio. He can play shortstop. Salas is untouchable.

Most valuable position on the field. Doubtful it happens here though. Yes it is. But we already have at least 5 shortstops, and 4 of them have long-term contracts.

Apparently, in an effort to sidestep the log jam at SS Merrill is now in the mix for an outfield spot.

The only contract that matters for that position is Bogaerts. This didn't age well Bogaerts was signed as a shortstop. He said that the other day, in fact. Whatever happened after the signing isn't really relevant. Does he provide surplus value? Yes. That's really all that matters from a contractual standpoint. He wasn't moved off the position because he can't play it anymore. Not sure I understand what you're trying to dig at from July of last year.

Impressive night for Merrill tonight. His bat control and pitch recognition are exceptional for how little game experience he has against advanced pitching.

High hopes for Merrill. He'll obviously have his ups and downs as a rookie, but at the end of the year I'm hoping to look at a good season from him. If he has a weakness, they'll find it real quick in the bigs, so he'll have to adjust. That will be key.

You can bet he'll have at least one weakness, and the rest of the league will find it almost right away. Adapt or fizzle out. I think he's in for the ride of his life, and I also think he'll learn quickly how to adapt to the changes coming his way. We'll see very soon how he reacts to them, but he appears to have a really strong work ethic and that will take him many places in his career.

Merrill had the hardest hit balls of both exhibition games: 107.3 and 107.0.

Impressive night for Merrill tonight. His bat control and pitch recognition are exceptional for how little game experience he has against advanced pitching. The Padres have a way of ruining that, trading him, and he "re-discovery" those traits on another team.
