Eh, we need to just give Voit more time at 1B and Hosmer more time at DH. Hosmer has been playing better this year on offense, and no it's not all luck. It's (partly) luck, and partly changes he made to his game. Like what, exactly? Curious. Yeah I already explained it in detail... his pull rate is way up over last year, he's swinging and missing less, he's working longer at bats and getting more walks and less strikeouts.

Pretty simple, but if a person doesn't want to see something good in someone, because they don't like an individual, they'll gloss right over it, even if it's helping your supposed favorite ball team. Instead, you'll just keeping beating on the negatives, no matter how minor they are at the time. Sad.

Yeah I already explained it in detail... his pull rate is way up over last year, he's swinging and missing less, he's working longer at bats and getting more walks and less strikeouts. The thing is that most of this is noise. His pull rate is up, yes. But the groundball to flyball rate is 2.75:1, significantly up from last year. Having a higher pull rate with that high of a ratio makes you easier to shift against and results in more outs over time on the ground. The swinging strike rate is down, yes. 2% or so. We'll see if that continues as they get deeper in the year. He's seeing fewer pitches than last year, though. 3.89 to 3.83, or basically the same, I should say. It's been 33 games, and there were reports in 2020 that he finally had achieved some launch angle in his swing in the shortened year....and we saw how that turned out. The concerning thing, one of them anyway, is that his launch angle against fastballs this year is zero. He's overachieving against fastballs in pretty much every metric, while killing breaking and offspeed stuff. I'm just not convinced that what he's doing is sustainable over an entire season, because he won't run a .420 BABIP into October.

Hosmer obviously won't hit in the 370's when it's all said and done. If he had a year anything like he did in 2017, that would be INCREDIBLE, but I would be happy if he hit in the upper 200's and was a clutch RBI contributor, etc...
His numbers are going to level out, and I'm sure Ryan will let us know as he gets in slumps, and all the other negative things that normally happen to all players throughout a season. We'll be reminded, for sure.

Hosmer is not letting up on the gas … I think he could keep his batting average over .300 this season, especially if opposing pitchers don't start making some adjustments.

But I think that everyone is seeing a hitter who's doing a better job at making contact with pitches and striking out less. That will translate into more walks, less strikeouts and a higher batting average then last year even when the BABIP straightens itself out.

Yes, it's not that difficult to figure out why he's doing better, unless you DON'T want to see it. Like I said, he'll have slumps like everybody else and things will level out like you said. I'm just hoping he's a solid contributor to a team that needs help on offense.

Neither have strikeouts, really. The increased walk rate is helpful, but he needs to hit for power. That's the missing link.

The Athletic: Is Eric Hosmer’s production real? He’s attributed his turnaround to Melvin’s confidence in him, but can you provide further insight into his changes and work with Michael Brdar? — Ben L. And, there ya go. Like I've said, it only tremendously helps the Pads if he has a good season. He'll have his ups and downs, but hopefully more ups. ——His .411 batting average on balls in play, second only to Boston’s Xander Bogaerts, obviously isn’t sustainable. But Hosmer ranks in the top 10 percent of the league in expected batting average. He’s worked with Brdar to lower his hands and shorten his load. So far, the adjustments are paying off. — Dennis Lin theathletic.com/3314039/2022/05/16/padres-mailbag-eric-hosmers-production-bullpen-solutions-and-payroll-thoughts/?source=user_shared_article

Scanlan broke this down the other day pretty well. Helps the barrel get through the zone quicker and takes some of the looping action out of the swing to create more efficiency with the bat path. This is what the Giants did last year with a lot of their platoon situations, maximizing matchups by using bat plane/path to create favorable offensive situations against certain pitchers. Really deep analytical stuff that I wish the Padres would go full on into.

He's still not hitting for power, but..... so what? HR's are down this year and he's still good for a couple of wins.

It's about sustainability with the current approach.

Check Wednesday’s paper for another good assessment of Hosmer’s adjustments. Almost hit one out just now…

Pretty easy to decipher that MLB is once again tampering with the balls. Balls with the same exit velocity and launch angle are traveling less distance. Whether it's the seams being raised or the core of the ball being messed with, it's not great for the sport. Yeah… the dead all era hits everyone equally, doesn’t it…

Definitely? Allegedly, last season they "secretly" used two different baseballs … which one(s) are still being used? More (*) coming up for this year's statlines…
