It says in the article there have been no discernable mechanical changes with the swing. He's pulling the ball in the air more, yes. Oddly enough, he's actually been at his best in the past when he uses the opposite field more. Small sample sizes probably have a lot to do with it, but he's going to need to hit the ball in the air a TON to offset the grounders. Highest pull rate in his career + lower exit velocity. I speculated on another page that this could be due to using a lighter bat. He's also fouling off more pitches. Hosmer has a higher contact percentage then he did in past years, he's seeing more pitches per at bat, and he's striking out less. That portion of his numbers is completely sustainable. We'll see when the team faces more competent pitching. Lower exit velocities aren't really something you want, especially with a heavy groundball approach.

What needs to be sliced and diced is just what Hosmer and Manny are doing to break through the obvious dearth of hitting/power in MLB.
… kind of hard to explain - but it might just be explained by the low level of pitching the Padres have faced so far - but why is anyone pitching to those two right now?

Yes, I think him being more selective, (seeing more pitches as you say) has really helped him. If he keeps that approach, I think it's sustainable to the degree of him having a consistent season. He did go 4-11 versus the Dodgers, which is one of the toughest teams around. I really try not to grade anybody until the All Star break, but him doing very well out of the gate, with a different approach, is very encouraging.

He passed his first test against one of the toughest teams in baseball, the Dodgers. He went 4-11, which is encouraging. Hopefully, he keeps it going against any, and all opponents.

Two very separate cases.

Hosmer, staying hot. Rips a line drive single up the middle for an RBI single.

It continues to be the Hosmer, Machado show on the offensive end for the Padres. Machado hits a rocket for a two run homer. All 3 runs, so far, driven in by these two. Hosmer just hits a laser line drive to first base, which was right at Naylor. Let's keep it going.

Apparently, Tony Francona read the memo about the danger of pitching to Hosmer.
Hosmer gets two free tickets to 1B today.

He actually had 3 walks today. He's doing everything you could ask of him, getting on base, driving in runs, squaring balls up, etc.....

I guess hanging in there is a bit more work than the auto-walk, but there's a certain amount of work that went into earning those auto-passes before he ever got to the plate. Sure wish they'd have iced that second game instead of watching it go through their mitts. They had a great roadie, though. Can't complain about that!

Eric Hosmer, the leading hitter in the league right now. That's what I heard on Padres Live right now. Enjoy it while we can!!! Not sure what that's based on, but that's awesome.

Now, if they can just get Profar, Grisham, and Cronenworth to start hitting above their weight…
Add Nola to this list. He's another flounder…
