Winning regular season games matter to fans, since it keeps them interested in their team, and gives them hope throughout the season. Regular season games are big in that manner. Diehard fans are going to watch/support regardless. Casual fans come and go. Team was #3 in attendance last season and just sold a record number of season tickets AFTER the 79-83 second half collapse. So, not really. Moves that are made off the field are going to drive interest regardless of immediate results. Melvin's hire was massive in that regard. To me, it was interesting that this year, the Padres announced pretty early on that they had sold (IIRC) the equivalent of 19,000 full season tickets (and probably more now). In other seasons, they couldn't give a number before the season started. And as to whether they reach 3 million in attendance this season--I still say they won't. They may get close, but I just don't see them doing it again.

Padres would have to average 37,000+ this season. That's tough.

What a night for MM. Holy cow! 5 hits, with the last being a HR.
The best way to open the season at home is just the way they did it tonight.

Easily the best all around game of the season thus far against the defending champs. Complete dominance.

And Eric Hosmer is just hitting everything right now. Sometimes the hitting bug is contagious. It'd be nice to see some of the Padres current Mendoza family members get hot…

Was a good night pretty much all the way around. Clevinger threw two innings at Elsinore and struck out five, Luis Garcia should be activated tomorrow to help out the bullpen and tomorrow is...Gore season.

12-1 over the Braves is a great result. That's really good news. The offense seems to be rebounding. I certainly hope that continues.
Grisham? 0-5 again. Batting .118 with OBP at .189 - Either something's wrong with him or he needs some serious help working on his swing.

And that low, screaming line drive that Manny hit out really nailed someone in the stands. Hope they are all right. One section over from where I was sitting, and that ball had lots of hair on it. Absolutely crushed. The exit velo must have been damn high.

Didn't affect Ozuna much, but it must've gotten to Rosario over in RF … LOL

That's one thing that really irks me. A guy stands in the batter box to watch his ball go fair, or foul, and it lands fair, and of course he only gets a single out of it. Horrible. You make contact like that, you run. And, what happens after that? The next guy hits into a double play. If he ran hard and got to second like he should have, there wouldn't have been a double play opportunity.
It benefitted the Padres, but it still really irks me to see laziness, or whatever you want to call it.
