The San Diego Padres and right-hander Nick Martínez have agreed to a four-year deal worth $20 million, a source told The Athletic, confirming an ESPN report on Wednesday. It also includes opt-outs after the first and second years.
However, with MLB owners locking out their players after failing to agree on a new collective bargaining agreement by midnight ET on Thursday, the deal agreed upon between the Padres and Martínez is not official yet.
Martínez, 31, has spent the past four seasons playing professionally in Japan. In 2021, he had a 1.62 ERA, 146 Ks and 39 walks while giving up just six homers in 149 2/3 innings for the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks. He was also a part of Team USA in the Tokyo Olympics this past summer.
Before that, Martínez played for the Texas Rangers from 2014-2017. Over that span, he notched a 4.77 ERA with 237 strikeouts in 88 games (68 starts).
