Time for a new thread for the Patrick Henry Community. With all the great players and good teams that have passed through this school, a section championship is the one thing missing. That changes Friday at 1 p.m. as Henry plays University City for the championship. This winner goes to the state tournament.

It used to be divisions were based on school enrollment. Now it looks like they're based on prior year ranking. With the old system you'd be competing with schools around your size. Now the good programs compete against each other, as do the inferior ones. Not sure how meaningful a lower division championship is.
But good luck to Patrick Henry.

Divisional playoffs are based on ranking and not enrollments? So DIV 1, 2 , 3 is based on how some committee ranks your school?

Really hope Aztec stadium is used for the HS championship games next year, if the turf allows for it. Will be a very good recruiting tool for the local guys

It looks like it might be a blended system? But that's still ridiculous. Any weight based on perceived ranking penalizes overperforming low enrollment schools and rewards underperforming high enrollers. It should be entirely based on enrollment.

I'm guessing here, but I think that PHHS is 0-5 in football championship games. I really hope that changes this week.

Update: PHHS 49 U.C. 21. Now onto the state tournament and hopefully a home game on a Saturday or 2. First time CIF football section champs. Other championship appearances happened in 1971,1973,1974 and 1994. GO PATRIOTS, from class of 1984.

Good news is the Henry Patriots will host Birmingham Patriots of Lake Balboa near Van Nuys Saturday at 6 p.m. This winner goes to the state 3A division final.

Yes, several years ago SDCIF moved away from enrollment based divisions to ones based on a 5 year rolling average. Each year the numbers go into the algorithm and they line everyone up from highest average to lowest average and then start separating schools into D1, D2, etc etc. Now I retired after 2017 FB season, so they may have altered it a bit. I was a HS coach when this was enacted. It has its good points and bad points. I loved competing against the Cathedrals and El Capitans of the D2 baseball world; we never beat them, but we had some great battles. OTOH, in 2017 we won a CIF Title in D3. I can assure you that players and coaches both think an awful lot of that Championship ring!

Congrats to Cathedral Catholic, Mater Dei and Scripps Ranch Highs for helping San Diego County win football state championships.
