A new member of the azhttp://www.aztectalk.com/index.php board started a thread voicing concern regarding proposed legislation that would affect the makeup of the SDSU student body. I hope that Aztecmathew does not mind my starting a similar thread here. Mathew states . . .
Please write or call your local legislator to oppose the bill AB 2401. If this bill becomes law, it will require all 23 CSU campuses to admit local students over other state applicants for admission. Here's the link to contact your legislator: www.leginfo.ca.gov or call 916-445-2841
The law would be a disaster for San Diego State, and the rest of the CSU for the following reasons:
•San Diego State for example has more than 60,000 applicants but only has space for a few thousands, so if it is required to admit all local students by law then there won't be any slot left available for students outside of San Diego area.
•Admission should be based on merit and not what city you live in. A substantical portion is already set aside at San Diego to give preference to local students so we are really only opposed to 100% having to be reserved for local students.
•The dorms at our CSU will be vacant if the admission space are all taken up by the local students who are most likely to live at home. We spent billions on the dorms through out the CSU so how would we repay the debt.
•Our campus will lack geographical diversity if the entire student body is made of local students at each campus.
•We are a state school, so it's unfair for students in San Francisco for example not being able to attend Fresno even though that student worked very hard to get the good grades and want to come to Fresno.
•Based on statistics, admitted students from outside the local area generally have more success in academics in that they are more likely to graduate. So it's more cost effective for the tax payer to admit students who have the most chance to graduate and enter the work force.
•Students outside of the local areas generally have higher GPA and test scores.
•High school students would not be able to attend a campus of their choice but a local CSU only. And their local campus may not have the major that they want.
•Many of the CSU have unique programs so students who do not live near those campuses will be shut out. For example, SJSU is the only campus in the CSU that has the meteorology program so students in San Diego who wants to major in meteorology would not be able to do so because he/she would most likely not be able to gain admission to SJSU.
•Programs such as the marching band or music may not have enough students to participate because the school is not allowed to admit students outside the local area even though that person wants to join the band. Given that 60,000 applies to San Diego, there won't be many spots left for the outsiders if the school can only admit a few thousands. San Diego is one of the biggest cities in the state, so there will be plenty of students applying to the SDSU leaving those outside the region with very little chance of getting admitted. Currently many schools give those students preference in admission based on their declaration of major, etc. We would not have flexibility with the new law..
•What about athletes? Can we still admit them if they are not within the local area?
