The MV expansion of the SDSU campus is going to be a tremendous boon for both the university and the community. Having said that, all the rinky-dink sports leagues hovering around don't impress. San Diego clearly needs to land an MLS team, which would do exceptionally well here. Not sure if they could cut a deal with SDSU to use the MV stadium as their home, but that would clearly be a great co-anchor tenant for the building. www.sandiegouniontribune.com/sports/chargers-rams/story/2021-06-10/san-diego-chargers-padres-sdsu-soccer-nwsl-loyalNearly 4 1/2 years have passed since Dean Spanos and siblings moved the Chargers, creating fallout that has raised questions such as this one: Who are San Diego’s biggest winners stemming from the NFL team’s relocation after 56 years here? The answer is obvious. San Diego State and the Padres, two institutions whose local roots were deeper than the football team’s, have emerged stronger since the Spanoses planted the Lightning Bolt in Greater Los Angeles. SDSU, after winning a public vote, was able to buy long-sought land on the Chargers stadium site, while the Padres avoided having to share the East Village with the Chargers and became the only major pro sports team in America’s eighth-largest city. Even if it was too politically delicate for leaders (or their proxies) of SDSU and the Padres to say it publicly, the Chargers not succeeding at occupying the same turf as theirs — either east Mission Valley or downtown, respectively — was what SDSU and the Padres wanted. A case can be made it’s also what they helped to achieve, though their roles there were likely limited. ...

100% MLS would be a great success in SD, and everyone knew that a couple years ago... and so it's too bad the soccer city bozos had to get greedy (although, as it turned out, maybe SDSU is thankful because things turned out pretty well). But that being said, clearly some type of mutually-beneficial arrangement between SDSU and MLS would seem to be very possible... and I hope there are constructive talks taking place behind closed doors.
(Edit: SD Loyal moving up from USL to MLS in a couple years would fit very nicely into such a plan)

If you are a fan of SDSU athletics then you should be rooting hard for an MLS team to share the stadium. Every dollar in rent an MLS team pays goes straight into our athletic department.

think it would be a great thing if the Aztecs gave away free tickets for any person who gets vaccinated (that has not ) to attend the New Mexico State or Towson games or maybe some tickets for those who have gotten both doses /or the 1 shot of J & J .

Hell, we all knew that way before they even decided to leave. I could've wrote that article in 2001, not 2021.

No question that would be great for us in the short term. However they'll need to see how successful they'll be here, no matter where they play. I'm sure the ultimate goal of MLS is to have their own stadium for every franchise. It's no different from how we felt about having to rent the SDCCU stadium. So if they decide to play in our stadium I can't see them doing so for very long. They'll either build one or leave.

Where is a realistic remaining site for a stadium? Chula Vista? North county?

SDSU is still having conversations with MLS. MLS was discussing San Diego not because of the FS Investors team but because it was San Diego. They want San Diego. It will happen.
I don't see anyone building a $200 million plus stadium in San Diego unless there's a bigger development behind it so you have the Sports Arena site and is there still opportunity on the Chula Vista coastal portion? Aztec Stadium is the perfect size and perfect location and it'll be ready in August 2022.

Fun times during college. lol

Would be a great gesture if the Aztecs would offer some football OOC tickets to get more people Vaccinated or even reward for those who have gotten vaccinated

Twice in the same threads even? About 75% of people in San Diego County have been vaccinated, you don't even need an appointment anymore, just walk into any Vons, CVS, etc. Hell, the state is even having a lottery for those who get vaccinated. I doubt tickets to Aztec games in LA will get the unvaccinated to rush out and get it. Most of the time you can't even give the tickets away for free.

I think it would be great for SDSU and the San Diego County to get as close as possible to being fully Vaccinated - Great to try to stop/ slow Covid and get closer to normal .
Would be very good PR for SDSU - show they too are community minded . Be on TV in a very positive way and even give our AD or Coaches an opportunity to be on the air
so it is worth repeating - you can skip reading it
Might even get more fans to some of the OOC games

San Diego footed the bill for the chargers and let them double dip. San Diego State took the risk in building the stadium and the Soccer club needs to realize that. I think if they pay their fair share there is no reason why it couldnt be successful especially if they tagged on with similar colors and an Aztec themed name as well. Could be a nice blend. Add flags/signage that blended into make it look spectacular.

Yeah I'm interested in a MLS deal if SDSU retains full stadium ownership, etc. and the MLS team is only a tenant.

I’ll rehash my take from when the Chargers bailed. It’s an indication that San Diego is a weak sports town and it is unlikely the NFL will be back.
Now that the Aztecs have a new stadium on the horizon they need to get out of the MW ASAP. The way that happens is by winning, selling out games with overwhelming fan support and seizing an opportunity to move up when it presents itself. Smashing Arizona and Utah this year would be a good start.
