"Strikeouts are boring. Besides that, they're fascist." Crash Davis. One of my top three fav baseball films, along with Pride of the Yankees and The Natural.

Only partially kidding, but Costner should be elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame simply for the quality of his baseball movies. Bull Durham, Field of Dreams and IMO a very underrated For Love of the Game are 3 outstanding movies which play into the romance associated with the game.

I was shocked to see that, but the 10 K aspect definitely makes it likely since that's 35-40+ pitches alone. Still, I would have thought there were some more. Pretty incredible. And to top it off with a sweet stroke double down the line for his complete Ohtani imitation....

Darvish was in command of his pitches. Between him and Carratini, I don't think any team would've done any better against him last night than Colorado did even though Colorado has a pretty sad record this year once they leave the Mountain Worst…

Darvish is dealing again tonight. 7 straight Ks… through the first 3 innings
And then, Mookie Betts comes to the plate.
Parked it over the centerfield wall.

Padres offense didn't help Darvish a bit today, and he kept them close enough to win. He'd have had to pitch a shutout to win today. Same old song.

Another tough game where this time the offense apparently can't beat the last place team in the East.
Yu pitches almost well enough to win, even though he really had control problems, curve was all over, etc. but except for a random homer (with bases empty), his team couldn't hit water if they fell out of a boat. Hosmer gets thrown out at the plate trying to stretch one, Tatis, Jr. gets caught trying to steal third with Pham at the plate. Arsonists (Adams and Crismatt) then come in and allow the Marlins to blow the game wide open. Would'a, could'a, should'a…
Given the race in the NL West, the Padres just can't afford to lose games like this. Today may well come back to bit them in the AZZZZtecs later on.

Yu didn't get much help in the field either. Manny's play on Merrera's ground ball to 3rd opened the door to begin with - still think he should get an error on that, which leads to 2 runs. Manny makes that play & it's still 2-2 & who knows how the game plays out? I get the bats last nigh - our heads were thinking more about the ump than hitting the ball, but today we just couldn't get anything going. Thankfully SF had a bad series and every team in our division is muddling along right now (all 5-5 over past 10 games), so we haven't lost any ground (nor gained). A 5-4 (+ good chance of another finished win) road trip isn't terrible; 6-3 (+1) definitely would have been excellent.

The problem at this point is that - as reported this morning - Yu isn't pitching like an ace on a playoff pitching staff. And I have to agree with that opinion. He has had a few good games this season, but again, the entire group of starters is not lighting up the charts. Yu hasn't really looked overpowering at any point this season. I've watched him on the Dodgers and Cubs, and seen what he looks like when he's dialed in and on target, and he just hasn't been so this season. Can't really blame a change in leagues - as some have suggested for someone like Blake Snell - since Yu isn't changing leagues, and he's seen many of these batters before. Whatever funk he's in, he at least still pitches well enough to keep the Padres in games. The two HRs he gave up yesterday, however, were weird. While it wasn't mentioned yesterday, it was confirmed today that the exit velocities on both HRs were pretty weak. So those pitches must've been right in the wheelhouses.
Hope he gets a handle on whatever's ailing him - whether it's finding a consistent release point, or something else - the Padres aren't going to get far into the post season without at least two dominating pitchers. Unless, of course, they just decide to throw BP games out there and hope opposing hitters won't have a clue what's coming next…

As in not home runs in any other ballpark, essentially. The xBA's were .150 (One of the lowest I've ever seen) and .270, also very low. He's clearly been affected by the substance ban, but I think it's a blip.

Sure hope so, and I wondered how the substance ban might affect his pitch movement. He's clearly not getting the movement he wants/expects on some pitches.

Sweat is still legal, and there's a rosin bag on the mound, so I mean... there's always a way to get some grip.

Don't get the worry over Yu. While he missed on the location, those 2 homers are outs in most places and the other 2 runs were due to Mannys mental error. He's fine.
