According to Football Scoop:
Syracuse: Pete Thamel tweets that Syracuse is expected to hire San Diego State’s Mike Schmidt as the school’s new offensive line coach. Schmidt has spent the last eight years as the team’s offensive line coach, and past 11 years with the Aztec program.

Dino Babers likes Aztec coaches. First Tony White, now Schmidt.
Although it seems Babers' seat should be getting hot.

if true
any thoughts on replacement for the Aztecs ?
another thought if Alex Smith is not able to continue playing in the NFL would Brady consider asking him to come to SDSU as QB coach - he did go Helix HS

Good for Schmidt if true. A change of scenery and philosophies could really benefit his career -- seeing how other coaches are doing things. Hopefully Hoke has a strong OL coach in mind who is available.

Opportunity for an upgrade... I agree. I never knew what to make of him. He seemed just ok.

I am happy for Mike and wish him well, he is an AFL and should be respected for that...
However, our line play has been average to real bad the last five or six years, maybe some of it was scheme and OC issues, but at least some of it lies with the OL coach.
Looking forward to the next man up.

Opportunity for an upgrade... I agree. I never knew what to make of him. He seemed just ok. Just OK? He was coaching the OL when we had two of the leading rushers not only for the Aztecs, but in the nation as well! (Pumphrey & Penny) And, as great as they were they didn't do it by themselves because many times they gave props to their OL in front of them! Schmidt did a remarkable job over the years with the OL. You're not just OK if your team is putting out that kind of effort! I am very happy for him and wish him well in his new endeavors. Just hope any new coach who comes in will be able to do as well!

Thanks Mike for 11 years of hard work helping our football program improve and rise to a higher level. I love how we trash those worked their asses off to make sure we had better teams and more fun every year. BY the way some of you are just OK fans and we could use some upgrades.

Big loss. I know many weren't happy with him but he wasn't the problem it was the play calling. He had a OC who ran the ball 70% of the time so defenses put everyone in the box to stop the run. Hard for a group to look good when everyone knows what's coming and you are being outnumbered. Now we have a OC who's way over his head and doesn't have the experience needed to probably be successful. Good for Mike, get a pay raise, boost your stock being in the P5 and get out before the offense really hits rock bottom.

Yes, good point but we obviously did run a lot and pass blocking was often was a problem through the years. What was odd is many times we would play someone like UNLV or Hawaii who was at the absolute bottom of the nation in run defense then not be able to run the ball on them. He’s a great guy and I’m guessing he’s doing this for a good raise.

The staff brought in a loaded group of OL for this next class. Wonder if Schmidt leaving will have an effect on that?

He’s a great guy and I’m guessing he’s doing this for a good raise. No question that defenses stacked the line against us in our run game. However, in obvious passing situations like 3rd and long we still couldn't pass block. Was it our QBs' inability to pull the trigger quicker? Tough call. If our new QBs are as good as we think they are, then Schmidt's replacement shouldn't have it as tough.
