Joe Biden has come down clearly on the side of teachers unions, some of which are refusing to return to in-person instruction until after universal vaccination (meaning vaccination of all students for which there is no FDA approved vaccine for elementary-aged kids and won’t be until 2022 at the earliest). While it is not a surprise that Republicans are unhappy with teacher’s unions pursing a course that is spiking child suicide, depression, drug use, and academically failing an entire generation, surprising news comes out of crazy-left San Francisco. Today the city of San Francisco sued their own school district. It appears even lefties care about their kids. It is only the Joe Bidens and Teachers Unions along with their hand-picked school boards that want to see the status quo continue no matter what it is doing to the kids. www.sandiegouniontribune.com/news/california/story/2021-02-03/san-francisco-sues-its-own-school-district-to-reopen-classesThat is what unity looks like.

As I understand it, private schools generally, and public schools in many areas, have been open for some time and the world has not collapsed on them. Also in Europe. Hasn't the federal government said that the schools should reopen?
This is stupid politics on the part of the unions.
(I will point out, by the way, that I was a member of the NEA during my whole teaching career and would be now it I were still teaching. Probably would not be making any friends with what I would be telling the leaders, however.)

I know the sentiment is not universal among teachers, and in fact you can see the areas within San Diego Unified where teachers want to go back versus where they are fighting tooth-and-nail to continue distance learning. When San Diego Unified reopened on a limited basis available only to “at risk” students and only by appointment, they could only negotiate voluntary participation from the teacher’s union. San Diego Unified has made the appointment data public. You can see which schools have teachers volunteering to come in and which schools haven’t had a single teacher set foot on campus. The teachers employed at San Diego Unified are not monolithic. In fact there is a wide disparity as evidenced by the disparity in the appointment data. It is just sad that the teachers driving the train over at the union aren’t the ones now going in to schools to help kids. It doesn’t help things when the President comes down publically on the side of those who don’t want in-person instruction.
