Let’s assume for this poll that it’s for all the major sports or at least for football and basketball.

Absolutely. Play in a western division with Boise, SMU, Houston and Tulsa. Yes please.

The #1 reason I would like to see this happen? Games would most likely start earlier in the day on Saturdays. 7 & 8 pm local time just doesn't cut it. ESPN also offers better national exposure. East Coast fans would actually be able to watch our games, & highlights would be seen on Saturday's "SportsCenter" rather than on Sunday morning's version. Better national exposure equals better recruiting, better coaching, better bowl game opportunities, better payouts, better financial support, better local support, etc. What's happened to San Diego State regarding Mountain West Bowl invitations over the years irritates me to no end, including what just happened to this year's team. Being passed over for a lower quality Hawaii squad is a complete joke. National perception is everything in this business. That alone should be reason enough to go to "The American". I also guarantee you "The American" will want to play a bowl game in San Diego's new Aztec Stadium, with a higher payout and against better quality competition... even if that competition ends up being against the Mountain West. Playing a bowl game against the Mountain West in San Diego is much better than playing against the MAC, Conference USA or the Sun Belt in places like New Mexico. ESPN's "Game Day" would also likely show up to our new stadium under "The American" umbrella vs. teams like Cincinnati, Memphis, Central Florida, Houston, Boise State, UCLA, Stanford, Cal, Arizona State and Utah than it would under the Mountain West logo. Lastly, for those of you who say that teams from "The American" are just too far away, I say this: If the University of San Diego can play its football in "The Pioneer League" against teams from Iowa, Minnesota, Indiana, Ohio, New York, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina and Florida, then San Diego State will do just fine in "The American Athletic Conference". www.cincinnati.com/story/sports/college/othercolleges/2021/01/14/boise-state-broncos-san-diego-state-aztecs-discuss-joining-american-athletic-conference-aac-report/4155906001/

Going to the AAC separates SDSU from other potential Big 12 or Pac 12 candidates like UNLV and Colorado State. The jump makes us a lot more likely to be the one called up to a major conference down the line. Really hope there is truth to these rumors.

If we stipulate that increased revenue will offset travel for Olympic sports, yes. As none of us here are privy to the budget scenarios, I have to say I’m not sure, and don’t know that I ever will be.
It’s not a P5 conference, but it’s a very clear improvement over the MW, which seems to be getting worse, not better. As a fan, I’d find the competition in the AAC far more compelling.
Fortunately, I’m not actually expected to make a decision on this. I don’t know how anyone could be certain either way with the information available at this time.

For anybody thinking of this move as being a stepping stone to a P-5 conference, do not forget the exit and entrance fees.

We will always have 6-7 home games and the value of SDSU to an eastern conference is opening up window 4 for the tv contract. So you can bet that every home game will be at 7-7:30pm. The same goes for any games against western schools in the conference (i.e. Boise). So when we play at Boise (or at CSU if they were to come) we will be playing at night. We would have four conference road games that might be on earlier in the day. One of those games will likely be against another western school. So that leaves a maximum of three conference road games that could be on earlier in the day. The non-conference games will likely all be late games because we are scheduled to play mostly Pac 12 schools (generally two a year) who have the same issues. One non-conf game will an FCS for sky show and then another is a G5 which if it is a home game will again be played at night because it is unlikely to be a marquee team. So we might gain three games a season that would be on earlier in the day.

Anything that gets them out of the MWC and Craig Thompson's decision making is fine by me.

Some other things
Could help in recruiting more players from Texas and other states in the AAC *****
Doubt BSU would get the same deal they have now with TV for football
Mountain schools used to get their way on many issues for the MW
Added exposure to a wide variety of fans and media across the country
Schools that have direct air line flights rather then the Mountain trips
think rivalries with schools in Texas and others would also develop - Houston , SMU ...

Has to include BB. Not sure where we would park the other sports.

When we were going to the Big East it was for a large increase in money and a guaranteed NYD bowl tie in, and we were willing to downgrade our MBB program to the Big West to get those things.
The AAC has neither a lot more money nor a guaranteed big bowl. Will they get those things by adding western schools? It seems unlikely.
If the AAC poaches 4 or more MWC schools, then we have to be one of those 4, because the MWC will be decimated. But, if they only take BSU or BSU + 1, then we may be better off staying in our regional conference.

Thought the AAC played in Ticket Master Bowl against SEC Fenway Park Bowl vs ACC Military Bowl vs ACC
plus at least 5 other Bowls against G5 conferences
If say SDSU , BSU and UNLV would join the AAC what major Bowl do you think the MW would still have ?
As you asked would I prefer to be in a regional conference (MW) or one that does play Nationally in some major markets - my vote would be National AAC
Also if AAC did add some major markets SDSU - BSU- UNLV or BYU .....to their current list of colleges in major cities .... think they might be able to talk with TV about getting additional Money
Think the recruits/players would like getting the extra national exposure
Rivalries could come grow - also have to think even Aztecs / Navy game could draw more then the AFA game

It's a yes, but I would say wait until the P5 tv contracts come up in a couple of years to see what happens and if the AAC gets raided. If they do lose some schools, then it may behoove us to stay put.

Yes, if it includes all sports. Maybe, if football and hoops only. No, if football only.

I don’t know if we can afford all sports - unless we get a lot more money. I’d like to know what the extra travel would cost us for all sports? Some people have compared the travel to Hawaii, but they are football only and they PAY us to travel to Hawaii. Without the travel subs they probably would never have been invited to the MWC.

BSU might add money. The others, including SDSU, not much, if any. Sorry, but look at the MWC contract. Traveling east is widely thought to be a disadvantage for sports - probably as bad or worse than high altitude for football. 5:00 pm is considered the optimal time for highest physical performance (slightly later for young men who wake up later and go to sleep later) 1:00 kickoffs in the eastern time zone feel like 10:00 for our players - a really bad time for young men. The increased exposure in central and eastern time zones might improve recruiting in Texas and the south, but hurt recruiting in CA, NV, and AZ.
