Some of the leaked information was also published by the NY Times as well as numerous foreign publications. Do you also propose to jail their management too? You know guys, that years ago, newspapers would use discretion in what the ran as news stories. Everybody around JFK including the press knew that he had women (Not one, but many) on the side. He even had the pretty young things come to the white house while Jackie was out shopping. Not one paper would print a story on the Presidents private sex life. They used discretion. "All the news fit to print." was one quotation by a major newspaper. "Fit to print" was the operative phrase. If any American Newspaper had staff members who printed the Wikileaks crap, they were printing news that was not fit to print because it could endanger American lives. Yes, they need to be rounded up and punished. Their acts were treason. They should be punished accordingly. Um Joe, please explain to me how an Aussie who puts out a website from Sweden, can be tried for treason in the U.S. =Bob

Bob. I am not in favor of a trial. I just want to shoot the son of a bitch. I guess we could have a trial after he is dead to exonerate ourselves. Just so much foolishness.
The only good traitor is a dead one. Shooting is good.

When Governments are afraid of the Truth becoming public information...watch out!

When Governments are afraid of the Truth becoming public information...watch out! Prescient. Who cares if it gets our soldiers and Marines killed or renders our missions useless. Who cares if it stifles internal debate or uncovers a necessary intelligence asset. Who cares if we can no longer have the freedom to discuss how to deal with partner governments. There are a lot of valuable, altruistic and critical secrets we maintain, all governments do, we can't afford to have them casually released.

There are a lot of valuable, altruistic and critical secrets we maintain, all governments do, we can't afford to have them casually released. I think we care. I have always been torn about the push and pull of the First amendment. To be intellectually honest, if I was appalled by the outing of Valerie Plame, I have to be concerned about these leaks too. It seems to me that no judgment was applied to these disclosures and there were no issues of corruption or malfeasance that needed a First Amendment airing. As information becomes more dispersed away from the traditional media, leaks like these will happen more often. There are instances where information should not be leaked. There are situations where the information is something that citizens need to know about their government. In this case (and in Plame's) the government leaker needs to be identified and prosecuted. The foreign guy should be brought to justice as well. The First Amendment creates tension. That tension is good, in my opinion.

I see no parallel with Plame but understand your outrage. It is just we differ on the facts of her so called "outing".

The people who are the watchdogs against overclassifying are congress and there are various classification review processes, plus the FOIA process to responsibly look at what we have. Contrary to -bob's historical reference, from a time where there was little scrutiny, there is much more now, albeit having to look at a lot of documents. We cannot arbitrarily give up what are called internally as "the keys to the kingdom" without some form of review. The processes are in place but like any process, there are pains and tensions that go along with it.
