According to a report in Baseball America, Minor League Baseball will announce on Wednesday that they have agreed to reduce the number of affiliated minor league teams to 120, from the current number of 162, starting in 2021.
This should result in a mass restructuring of the remaining affiliated minor league teams, and what leagues they will play in.
2 of 13 teams to be completely eliminated are reported to be the Lancaster Jethawks (which reduces the Cal League to 7 teams), and the Tri-City Dust Devils, which is the Padres Northwest League affiliate.
28 other franchises are slated to go a so-called independent "Dream League" or a college wood bat league.
There is one other team that will lose their affiliation--most likely the Quad Cities River Bandits in Davenport, Iowa (nice park, and right on the Mississippi River).

Do you know if this was based on the effects of Covid-19 or was this planned prior?

Do you know if this was based on the effects of Covid-19 or was this planned prior? This has been in the works for quite some time. Nothing to do with the virus. Although, the virus could end up being responsible for some teams going belly-up if they don't play this season. MLB and MiLB are supposed to have a conference call today on the particulars.

Manfred has been trying to do this for well over a year. No mystery who he works for. This will have major ramifications for teams that scout and draft well, such as the Padres.

They may have had the conference call, or maybe not. Still nothing to announce as far as contraction is concerned.

Another conference call scheduled for Wednesday, 4/29. Nothing of any interest (apparently) came out of last week's meeting.

Manfred works for the owners, who control the sport. The owners don't want to shell out millions of dollars unnecessarily for players with zero shot at making the majors. (Absolutely terrible, btw). The new normal is likely a shortened draft (10 rounds likely) which will hurt baseball in the long run, but Manfred has never been accused of being a forward thinker.

Still not a peep from either MLB or MiLB regarding the minor leagues this season.

The affiliated minor league baseball season has been officially canceled.
Still no announcement regarding minor league contraction plans proposed by MLB.
