I know we played terrible and UNLV played well but still........
2. Questionable calls hurt Aztecs’ chances at a comeback Minutes before tipoff, San Diego Union-Tribune’s Mark Zeigler tweeted Saturday’s referee crew was somewhat of a question mark, according to Kenpom. Though Zeigler stated those ratings aren’t without flaws, it seems a bit surprising to have the fourth-ranked team in the country draw a referee crew that ranks in the hundreds. Referee Nate Harris is ranked 106th nationally, Tom O’Neill is 157th and Casey McClellan is 172nd.
Junior forward Matt Mitchell is in disbelief after a call went against the Aztecs’ way during their 66-63 loss against UNLV on Feb. 22 at Viejas Arena. Photo by Kareem Jones.
Obviously, no game is called perfectly, but the calls both ways on Saturday felt a bit more questionable. For the Aztecs, there were a few calls that they would’ve hoped would have gone their way. With under three minutes to play, they were down 58-51, and Mitrou-Long nailed a floater for the Rebels over Mitchell, who was looking for a charge as he fell down as he made contact with the Rebels guard, as the shot clock expired. No whistle was blown. Then with under two minutes left and the Aztecs down 62-56, Mitchell attempted to drive the lane on a spin move. He felt he was hit as he lost possession of the ball. No whistle was blown in the Aztecs’ favor. Instead, it was a call against Flynn on the rebound. Those two calls didn’t win or lose the game for the previously undefeated team, but calls like that are ones the Aztecs would have wanted, especially when the ending result is a loss. “College basketball is a hard game to officiate,” Dutcher said. “Both teams probably felt there was a call that could have gone their way, and it didn’t. That’s just college basketball. “The team doesn’t get caught up in that. I tell them let me worry about it. Like all coaches, I’m trying to work (with the referees) for a call. They’re not perfect, and some calls I don’t think they get called right, I go back and watch tape and they are right… When you lose, you would’ve hoped you would have gotten a call or two more, but that didn’t happen.”

I love Matt Mitchell and K.J Feagin's game.....but, they need to get over their looks of disbelief and just play ball.....

The referees definitely were not the reason we lost but they were terrible. The steal Malachi had they called a foul on. Not calling a foul on UNLV on Mitchell’s spin move, AG has his feet planted they called a block plus about two calls to start the game. What about the UNLV player that dunked the ball at the end of the first half and looked at the SDSU bench and screamed, no tech for taunting? I swear the taller referee with the bald spot wasn’t watching the same game as the rest of us when it started. The saying live by the 3 die by the 3 was true last night and it looked like they were using the Wilson ball not the Nike. We missed too many layups, chip shots and open 3’s. The team never gave up and found a way to make a run though. The run obviously fell short but I have a feeling they are going to come out extra focused vs CSU on Tuesday and run them out of the building.

I think Arop was in the circle but Mitchell wasn't when he should have drawn a charge on #55.
KJ doesn't typically complain like last night. There was one call he was really upset about that never got explained. It happened when he lost the ball near midcourt on what looked like a TO. He was really upset. Not sure if he thought he was fouled or he heard a whistle and stopped or something else. Schakel was talking to officials a lot too.
They were all talking to Nate Harris, who made a large number of bad calls; on both sides but more to ours.

I had to think about my season tickets but I wanted to go to the court and tell these zebras they are terrible. To the SDSU athletic department file a complaint with the mwc to NEVER have these 3 refs again. I can take winning and losing but NOT when refs decide the game. SDSU did take horrible shot selection but the horrible calls overtook them. can someone explain how unlv got the ball with 3.3 seconds left when the pebbles player threw it off Arop who was out of bounds. I turned my back when the pebbles shot free throws in the second half. mwc needs to fire these 3 zebras.

I have fantasized about that many times. I have wanted to get in their face and scream all the invectives and insults that players and coaches aren't allowed to do. But I will then be "escorted" off the court, be issued a court summons (not basketball court) and have to give up my 23 year-old season tickets while being banned for life.
The hearty cheers that would ensue would not be worth it. But last night I thought that they just might. Can't remember being that angry at refs.

the one thing the crowd can yell is the actual words of B.S. when terrible officiating happens. also, the same play gets called two different ways infuriates players and/or a too quick or too slow whistle. unlv was given the too slow whistle (foul shots) while SDSU had the too quick whistle (take the ball out of bounds). that was refs deciding the game.

It's one thing to trash the officials, when they deserve it. It is quite another to do so and be ignorant about the rules.

Refs can decide close games. Best way to prevent that is to not make it close.

Refs can decide close games. Best way to prevent that is to not make it close. There were so many reasons we lost besides the refs. 1) Yanni's 5 missed FTs and numerous bunnies 2) KJ and Malachi 5-19 on 3's 3) Pulliam's complete disappearance I'm not sure why Arop didn't play more, especially against #34. He was beating Yanni on the boards and that's Arop's specialty. He's so strong and determined too. I guess Dutch was hoping Yanni would go back to being Yanni but he never did. Seiko and Pulliam both looked like zero contributors last night. They were both so hesitant to shoot or even get aggressive.

i am talking about when any player throws the ball off a player who is standing out of bounds. this play the unlv player was in bounds and threw it off a SDSU player standing out of bounds. the same rule says a player can't be the first player to touch the ball after they go out of bounds. it would be enforcing a dead ball rule. I was judging possession on the last player (unlv) touching it in bounds while throwing it off someone out of bounds. It should have been SDSU ball.

The refs did suck, but if we shoot even close to like we normally do, we win this game by double digits. But, the ball wasn't falling and we got what we deserved.

You are not reading or understanding the rule correctly. The correct call was UNLV ball.

Schakel played the best of the starters, which is arguably damning with faint praise. Imo, Arop played best on team on a value per minute basis.

The refs did not say a thing. Or when the UNLV player that fouled out went into the on court huddle, the refs did not seem to care, but his own teammate (who seemed to be the only person on the court who knows the rules) went on the court and pulled him out.

I think that Nate Harris should not be in the top 200... He did not call the kicked ball in the first half that happened before the Aztec charging foul.
Crunch time, there was the foul where the UNLV player faked a shot, never left his feet and was standing looking to pass. The only person faked out was Nate Harris, it was a slight contact but not a foul. No disadvantage, should only be called if a player is in the air. He anticipated the shooting foul, a cardinal error for an official.
I think the way the game was called was more of an advantage to UNLV. But we lost because we could not make a shot and don't have a strong inside game for when we are cold.
Still, the worst officiated game I have seen this year, live or on TV.
