The question has come up and it’s a tough one to answer regarding Matt Mitchell’s prospects of being an NBA talent. This is a hard one to tackle, but the Oracle has figured it out.
MM will either be a huge surprise or flop in the NBA and it comes down to his weight.
The Oracle believes that, offensively, MM is ready for the next step. He’s got a very good outside shot, he doesn’t turn the ball over (very important and a very underrated part of Kawhi’s game), can rebound, can shoot FTs, and can create shots for himself. Also, he is 6’6” which is a good height for the NBA.
Defensively, he may be an issue due to his weight. Although MM is athletic, he’s not explosive and quick enough to keep up with the speedy guards of the NBA. SG’s like Harden, Olidipo, McCollum, and Booker are all very elusive players that requires defenders to be laterally quick and be able to recover fast from taking a mis-step while playing defense.
We’ve all heard that MM has lost 20-25 lbs. during the off season. The Oracle thinks that if he can lose another 10-15 lbs., it would really help his game in terms of speed. Don’t know if the listed weight on his bio was before his diet, but it shows that he’s at 240 lbs. If he can get to 230-225 lbs., he can really be explosive and keep up with players from three positions; PG, SG, and SF. He would be a fantastic do-it-all type of utility player in the NBA. If you think about it, MM’s game is a cross between Donovan Mitchell and Zion Williamson (but not as explosive as Zion). The Oracle believes there is a place in the NBA for a player of that build.
Let’s keep our fingers crossed for MM that he can continue to lose and maintain a good weight for his size. Literally, millions of dollars are on the line in conjunction with his weight.
The Oracle has spoken.
