Had a great time at the game. All-around great experience. Rode up on the train with a gazillion Aztec fans. Walked into the Marriott and immediately saw coach Dutcher. Took a selfie with Coach. Gave him a pep talk and some game strategy advice, which he obviously took to heart. Then went to the elevator to go up to my room and ran into Flynn, Johnson and Pulliam getting off the elevator. Gave them a pre-game pep talk, too. They clearly listened to my advice, as well, which was, “Go, Aztecas, beat the Yoots.” Then after dinner while walking back to the hotel, I saw some guy struggling to jam a suitcase into the back of an SUV. He was wearing red-and-black, so I figured he was a brother in arms. He was struggling mightily with the suitcase when I chirped, “Aztecs!” The guy’s head swiveled around and he started laughing. It was Matt Mitchell. Win a game by 30 and you’d think you could get someone to take care of your luggage. So, yes, you can thank me for spreading lots of good Aztec karma. You’re welcome.

Clearly the PAC 12 underestimated how good the Aztecs really are,or they would have assigned a better announcer than McLain to broadcast this game.

I just looked at the men's basketball page on goaztecs and it says in the headlines column "Aztecs improve to 12-1" WTF?

I’m even having a hard time finding highlights, aside from
The PAC 12 network showing like 6 made Utah jump shots. If goaztecs.com posted them I’ve clearly overlooked.

When it's all said and done, the Aztecs took care of business and left no doubt who was the better team, or pretty good for a Mountain West team. I really hope this provides some motivation that the team has much more to strive for than just a ranking in the polls at this point of the season. In spite of the lopsided score, I saw that this team wasn't hitting on all cylinders and can be much better, and will have to be in order to show the "McLeans" in March how good this team really is

There were some points during the game where they started missing shots and giving up easier baskets to Utah but that was short-lived. When it was 18-8, it easily could have been 26-8 and I worried that by not putting them away early, Utah would eventually go on a run and get back in the game. But I'm finally starting to believe not only in our depth but the quality of our depth.
If Seiko takes the open shots and Trey keeps shooting those floaters, the guards are set. If Joel keeps getting more athletic and Mitchell continues to do all the things he's doing, we got 9 strong kids with Arop about to make it 10. And we can play that suffocating defense all game, even at altitude.

My 2 cents on game. While Flynn had a great game my MVP was N Mensah and while M Mitchell's stats weren't up to avg the were a couple plays where he just wanted it more than some. NM 14 pts 5 rb 1 block but did way more on O and D that doesn't show up up in box score. And in second half I had just mentioned how MM only had 3 pts and we were up 15. Then he ripped a defensive rebound from a teammate and 2 utes went down court got an offensive rebound and was fouled for the free throws. Get sequence. Not to mention him diving for ball when we're up by 12. Ended up with 7 and 3 but once again stuff not in box score.

The transformation of Mr. Mitchell continues to amaze and delight me. Not sure if it’s the lost weight, added quickness or just a lot of time working on his game in the off-season but he just looks so smooth in whatever he does.
When he dove for that loose ball that late in the game I actually stood up and cheered in my living room. He’s turned into my favorite Aztec.

A lot of players have mentioned how much better the chemistry is this year. Maybe he just likes his teammates more this year. Whatever it is, it’s apparent he’s enjoying himself and playing at a really high level. Love his moxie |
