Sometimes, weather permitting, I enjoy an evening game sitting outside on my veranda with a cooler of brewskies by my side and listening to Uncle Teddy on the radio. Agreed. I like Ted.

Uncle Teddy is big Aztec supporter and will be the PBP guy until he wants to retire, as he is an institution in SD. IMO he is no longer an effective PBP announcer for football and has been awful at hoops for years. I know he only has a few years left due to his eye sight issue. For the fans that enjoy Uncle Teddy embrace his time left. However, for me personally I am ready for a new Aztec PBP announcer.

If our games were televised I wonder if it would matter with regard to the lack of general community interest in Aztec football? Was considering this last night. It makes sense, the interest in Aztec football, or lack thereof. 1. The teams we play, the schedule we play, it's caca. It's not the 1940s, where small schools were still a thing. It is IMPOSSIBLE for the average, non-alum to give a horse's ass about beating San Jose, Utah State, Fresno, Wyoming, Weber State, etc. If you win, big deal; lose, you suck. 2. The style of offense we play is from the 1950s. It is IMPOSSIBLE for the average, non-alum to willingly subject themselves to the low-wattage, zero thrills a minute brand of football we play. They now actively avoid it, based upon attendance figures. 3. The stadium we play is in is from the 1960s. It is IMPOSSIBLE for the average, non-alum to go to that cavernous, crumbling, multi-purpose relic and not be underwhelmed by the (non) experience of it. It's a pretty desultory, lifeless place to be; this is NOT an indictment of the fans who do attend, per se, but a realization that a 1/3 full concrete ring with a 1970s scoreboard still broadcasting low-def 4/3 aspect images is ludicrous in 2019. 4. Tastes are changing, this isn't the 1990s. ALL sports are falling in viewership and it's a world-wide phenomenon. Sure, there are outliers, but nearly everything sporting-wise is in decline. Olympics. Soccer. Baseball. NFL. College football. Car racing. You name it, less people are showing up and less people are watching. People have so many options to entertain. Plus, frankly, anything done over and over gets boring. 20 years ago, Super Bowl 20 or whatever, way more interesting than Super Bowl however many we're up to. World War 2 was extra exciting because it was only fought once, not every four years. You tell me we're having one last SuperBowl, that's Must-See TV. I'm joking, but not completely. 5. The records we compile, gaudy though they may appear, are just so very 2019. So is the bowl situation. We play such weak teams and there are so many bowls, it's IMPOSSIBLE for the average, non-Alum to get excited about and buy into, what with there being no visible upward progress, no real bowl to get to (other than the G5 bowl bid pipe dream), no realistic chance of fighting our way into a real conference. 6. The sheer proliferation of sports/leagues. Used to be college and the pros. Now there are all kinds of sub-leagues cutting in, like football with 3,4 leagues, I've lost count. The game has spread throughout the calendar. And it's not that people are watching XFL instead of the NFL, it's that it exists and that there is football on nearly every night of the week (currently, only Tuesdays and Wednesdays are football free in-season). Too much of anything devalues it. Supply and demand is still a thing. And there's too much of everything. That's my 30 cents. I don't like it, but that's how it looks from where I'm standing. Enjoy what we have, I suppose. It's the only football San Diego has above high-school level or will, likely, ever have.

I never liked Ted. It goes all the way back to my time in Delaware when Ted was doing sports on a Philly station. I grew to appreciate his talent (he's excellent as a MC at events such as Tony Gwynn's celebration of life) and he obviously loves the Aztecs but it really is time to retire.
I left work at the start of the 2nd half Saturday night and put the game on the radio for the ride home. On a short yardage play for SDSU Ted insisted that the RB didn't make it back to the line...'ran right into the backs of his O line'. About 10 seconds later his sidekick (Ohrnberger?) says 'the Aztecs get a good spot. That's a 1st down!'. On the TD pass to Jasmin I could hear the crowd roar in the background a good 3-5 seconds before Ted told me it was a pass for a TD. For the second time in as many games as I've listened to Ted said there was 'x amount of time left'. Except he forgot to say 'in the 3rd quarter'. Pretty confusing if you are just tuning in.
Sometimes the hardest thing to do is admit that you are no longer are as good as you used to be. Ted is at that point. I feel bad about all the medical issues he's been dealing with the last few years and I wish him the best going forward but it really is time to play 'Happy Trails' and go proudly into the sunset.

This is a very important game. Whoever wins takes the division and goes to the MWC championship game. Hawaii is a very tough team. In fact, Hawaii may well be favored by the odds makers.

Hawaii O only put up 14 against Unlv. Our D could have another strong night. Stay more aggressive with our play calling and Agnew throws it well again, and I like our chances.

The Hawaii QB is very good, can run and pass and he is tough. They are going to score so ball control will be very important. UNLV was in this game Saturday and then came then the mistakes by the freshmen QB determined the game. Two picks, one was a pick 6 that gave Hawaii the lead. This is going to be a tough game so all on board. Go Aztecs kick their rainbow ass.

I agree with you mostly. For most of my career as an Aztec football fan I have always listened to a radio while watching the home games. In Ted's early years as our play-by-play guy he always referred to "your Aztecs." During away games he would frequently make comments like "hurry up guys, I got a plane to catch to broadcast the Padres." It was like he thought broadcasting college games was beneath his dignity. I even quit taking my radio to the games.
In later years he finally adopted the Aztecs and started saying "my Aztecs" or "our Aztecs" and I was able to listen to him again.
Unfortunately, probably due to his health and age, he has problems calling the games. Now with my radio at the games I get two games for the price of one. The one I see on the field and the one Ted is describing. He frequently gets the down and distance wrong. His description of the play frequently doesn't describe what actually happen. I remember one play from the Fresno game that Ted described as a short run, it was a 7 yard run on first down. Not what I'd describe a short run.
Ted is entertaining and an institution in San Diego. But, I don't think he'll be broadcasting Aztec games much longer.

Hawaii won 21-7. Spectrum TV is channel 691 on direct tv so I'm good. Go Aztecs! The SDSU vs Hawaii game will not be on channel 691

correct winner of the game goes to MW title game
Also it is more important to be scoring TD's on each drive rather then just doing a long drive and coming away empty or settling for FG's . Go get into attack mode on offense and stay that way the whole game . Put Hawaii in having to play catch up . Scoring is the key be it fairly quickly or having to nickle and dime them .

but I can watch BYU on the BYU channel or any Big 12 Midwesterner game on Fox Sports San Diego or channel 51. This is the biggest joke about San Diego, how our most successful college and only football and basketball team in town away games are not televised locally. And last night's game couldn't draw 27K, and other than the Sky Show, attendance hasn't been close to 30K for any home game. Connecting the dots yet? Deciding whether I wanted to meet my Ute friends at Rice Eccles, I decided to eventually show up in my "UCLA Alumni" sweatshirt, looking like an freak amongst a sea of Red Utes,
deciding to make an early exit for obvious reasons.
My point? As I was drowning among the UTE faithful, I finally focused on one of the things I realized was crucial to the U of Utah's ascension among college football ranks and did a little analysis as it related to Aztec support based on the information I could obtain.
In 2011, Rocky Long's first year as head coach, average attendance for the first six home games was 41,051, including two 50K+ games against Washington State and Boise State.
In 2019, Rocky Long's ninth year as head coach, average attendance for the first five home games is 30,239, (again, including 40,222 for the Sky Show) .
My point? Certainly marquee games draw crowds, as I trust the coming BYU game will. But I feel compelled to point out in the nine years as head coach, Long's success on the field has done little to build a stronger fan base for Aztec football in San Diego, and arguably seen support gradually diminish. So, in essence, in my humble opinion, the relative success he has had with this program doesn't register positively with probably the most important statistic, (which makes Coach Fisher's impact on community support all the more incredible).
I'm no soothsayer, I'm a pragmatist. I've followed this program since the late 60's and I've seen the successes and failures. For me, the last two home games sent out yet another alarm that this program has certainly seen better days regarding community support and the thought of a new stadium energizing the program may be nothing more than an expensive and costly fool's errand.
(Shudda upgraded that campus stadium when the school had the chance and this concern would be moot. But with a new basketball arena instead, maybe that act was a precursor).

Retired Aztec, I admire your chutzpah~ no matter how much $#!+ you take, you come back for more. Shows real sand. And that's an interesting take; I didn't quite realize attendance has been in such decline in the Rocky Long era. I think what may be lost on the true Aztec fan that's NOT lost on the general public is that earning ginned up win-loss records against college football's dregs employing a stultifying brand of football won't put casual fans in the seats. Sure, if we were beating the Oklahomas and Washingtons and Michigan States of college football 6-0, who cares? Just get me to the stadium! But beating Weber Fricking State 6-0, or flopping about scoring 13 here and 17 there against bottom-feeders is like watching paint dry. People aren't stupid. Times are tough and the rent is too damn high and people choose where to spend their entertainment dollar. And Aztec football, at present time, is not entertaining for non-Aztec fanatics. Personally, I love defense, but watching the antics on the offensive side of the ball dulls the fun considerably. PS: You should probably drop the 1000th iteration of 'Shudda upgraded Aztec Bowl'; WE KNOW. But the horse has left the barn, it's dead, and it ain't coming back. Also, telling us how, sporting the moniker RETIRED AZTEC, you wore a UCLA sweatshirt to the game, you might just keep that little bon mot to yourself. Or not. Your call. Cheers and GO AZTECS!

What team and coaching staff can get their team ready play - time to make sure the offense is going full throttle .

Uncle Teddy is big Aztec supporter He is not a "big time" supporter of SDSU. This is a just a job for him. He gets to do and say whatever he wants and nobody cares. Why don't we have an SDSU alum be the voice of the Aztecs?

Why don't we have an SDSU alum be the voice of the Aztecs? True, at least for most of his career in San Diego. But we don't necessarily need an alum to get an announcer who's a big time supporter. Ron Reina was not an alum. He was a huge Aztec supporter. He was also very good on the radio. I miss Ron doing the broadcasts.
