We can be so much better and still we won. This team can be very good this year and make it an unforgettable season

Good road win. Even without Childs BYU is a solid team and a tough place to play. Did we play perfect? Absolutely not, Flynn struggled in the 2nd half, we had some really silly turnovers. But rebounding came up big as well as Schakel, there were moments where there was a bit too much hero ball but 2nd regular season game of the year you have to be please. Some missed layups too to clean up. Next up is a adequate grand canyon team, yes they lost to a D2 opponent to start but played a good illinois team well.

I couldn't listen to the game today. I've heard a rumor of victory. Over BYU? Sweet.

The tide turned on the Dutcher timeout at the 2:14 mark. The intensity the rest of the way was off the charts. Malachi would not let Haws take a breath, just great defensive intensity! I said last week that they just need to get Jordan in space and good things will happen. That guy has worked his ass off this summer refining that quick and deadly release. And those 4 FT's by Matt right into the student section down the stretch were absolutely calm, cool, and clutch!

Deliverance, 1972. I have always wondered whatever happened to that banjo pickin' genius lad at the river dropoff point.
Well, now I know. Amazingly, just 47 years later, he played for BYU today. And he is about as good on the court as was with his banjo. If HeeHaw is still on some TV network, maybe.....

It pains me to say this (in a good way though) but we'll need to root (gag) for YBU to win some big games from here on out for this game to mean more. Now excuse me while I go and wash my mouth out for having to say that.

A few observations on todays game: Note to opposing coaches, it appears that if Yanni starts to dribble he should be immediately double teamed to get a turnover. Also let him shoot when he is near the basket. The Aztec guards made a lot of good plays today. Would like them to be bit more consistent. Good scoring and assists, plus defense. Mitchell stuck knives into the Cougar throats on those FTs. If Arop continues to improve, he'll be getting a lot more minutes this year. Surprised not to see more of Keshad. Schakel became a stone cold assassin in the second half. Played like the First Team AllState CA guy, which he was.
Not the cougars best team, but they do play very solid fundamental basketball, are again great shooters, and run like crazy to take full advantage of the altitude.Their style of play compensates well for any perceived lack of athleticsm.

I think all those turnovers will disappear as the players spend more time together. Our offensive sets look wonderful, they just werent connecting at times, and thats what led to all the hero ball. Once they gel together it has the possibility of being a thing of beauty. Not writing we beat Duke level of beauty, but definitely something good.

Now we just need to beat the next three teams we’re supposed to beat and go into the Tournament with some momentum.

I don't remember us having anyone that could make all those quick release step back 3's at the end like Schakel did under all that pressure with a hand in his face on every shot. Impressive.

The Aztecs offensive rebounding was only average, 32%. It is the Aztecs defensive rebounding that was exceptional, 93%.

Schakel was on fire. Without his hot shooting in the 2nd half we would have lost. While this is true, that is how games work... in reality we missed about ten or so shots at the rim, most night half those go in and we don’t need Schakel to be perfect...

We shot only 43.9% on Two Point Shots, our expected FG% was closer to 65%, meaning we missed a bunch of “easy” shots... the question will be was that indicative of what our skill level is around the basket or was it just second game getting to know each other on the road at altitude... I think it is more the latter...

So far through two games our OReb% of 39.7% is ranked 27th in the country while last year we were 162nd at 26.7%... Our DReb% of 81.3% is ranked 47th while last year we were 73.2% good for 197th... Basically, it looks like we have gone from a below average rebounding team to a very good rebounding team...

Just a thought for Mitchell. Dude the fade away 11 footer is lethal. Keep doing it until they make an adjustment and stop it which BYU had no answer. Reminds me of Winston Sheppard when he use his inside jump shot that no one could block.
