Matty Mitch - Player of the Week, I know the competition is limited, but hopefully these are good signs for the Fall.

He was at the Swish Pro Am playing with Nathan, I was there, #23 as stated on the team roster from their web site, Team Balboa, in real blood and flesh....on Thursday just as the schedule shows. I went back on Saturday to see Team Balboa again but Malachi was a no show. You missed it man. At least I learned how to pronounce his name. The announcer was saying Mala-Kai, not Mala-Chee I watched some of the live stream and that wasn't Malachi Flynn. Some other player was wearing his number. I've been watching Malachi since he played us during the Wooden Classic and I'm pretty sure that Malachi hasn't play in the Swish league yet. Thanks, you're the second person to say that....I could have sworn I heard the announcer say his name, but I'll be there Thursday, and I'll ask the announcer if that was him.

would be great to see if Matt M had slimmed down , slows down and lets the game come to him - rather then force it
any word what the distance is for three point shot at these games

would be great to see if Matt M had slimmed down , slows down and lets the game come to him - rather then force it any word what the distance is for three point shot at these games It was mentioned in one of the earlier posts by someone who saw Matt play that he does indeed looked a bit slimmed down. But, you know, he's never gonna be Jalen McDaniels in body type, any more than Jalen will bulk up to Matt's body type. Matt is what he is, and I'm mostly good with what he is. I think Matt is better suited to playing the 3 than 4, so if anything I would like to see his handles improve. That has been my primary complaint with him, too much dribbling for a guy who hasn't been a great dribbler. But, Dude has shown the ability to take over a game offensively, and I think now that he is an upperclassmen who has basically started every game since he stepped on campus, his maturity should be apparent this coming season. Meaning there won't be much he hasn't seen, and that will result in the game slowing down for him further. No idea on the 3 pt line in these games, but would guess that they are at the 20'9" line.

concur would hope that Matt can concentrate on playing the 3 most of the time . With Jordan .
Does mean we will need solid D and rebounding on whomever is playing the 5 and 4 and some scoring . Nathan and his back up be it Nolan , Yanni , or Joel at the 5 .
4 hope AG is healthy or possibly , Yanni, Joel , Nolan, or the new freshman- is it TJ but if needed Matt . Key at both the 5 and 4 is defending and rebounding both weaknesses last year .
We have heard good things about Malachi and the other new guards but will they be able to mesh and get the movement needed for good team basketball and get the front line involved

Well I specifically went to see our new 6' 2" point guard, Malachi Flynn, transfer from Washington State. He's the real deal. Not flashy, but plays within himself, my kind of guy, with very sound fundamentals. Staying in front of his man, always looking for the pass inside, has a sweet 3 point release. He has great handles, he'll make everyone around him better compared to all the run & gunners out there. I finally found out tonight from the coach of Team #1 Balboa that Malachi Flynn is injured. I still don't know who that is wearing #23 that is listed as Malachi's number on the roster. I'll try to find out more about Malachi's injury this Saturday.

Observations on a a game and a half of watching tonight. Kell looked like a man among boys; smooth as silk with a beautiful and accurate shot. He was getting after Mitchell pretty hard on defense. Didn't look like there was a lot of love lost between them.
Mitchell had a lot of points but took a whole lot of shots. Looked a little trimmer. He argued with the refs every time he had a foul called on him, and a few times when teammates were called for them too. Got a technical for either saying something or flipping a ball towards someone. Seemed like teammates quit passing him the ball late in the game as they would usually never get it back.
Schakel would disappear for long stretches but then score a few quick baskets with heads up plays.
Narain looked pretty good against the big UCI kid Rutherford.
J Mensah was a non-factor
N Mensah fouled a lot, didn't look very quick and didn't seem to hustle much.
Federico played with his hair on fire and was fun to watch. I can see how he scored so much at DII level.
Wetzell never stopped hustling. He ran hard on fast breaks, ran back hard on defense and went after loose balls. Really like his style and more athletic than I thought he'd be.
Pulliam looked very good too. He handled the ball well and was an excellent passer. He scored a few buckets and looked good doing it. Not very big though.

Thanks for the observations. I was there for 3 games and my opinions are spot on with yours except for being disappointed to find out #23 I've been watching over the last 3 weeks isn't actually Malachi Flynn as listed on the online roster, because Malachi has been injured as I just found out after asking the coach last night.
Matt forced a lot of shots and complained to the ref every time after he missed which gets old and was taking shots 40 ft out. For a tough looking guy he hung out at the wing too much. Seems like he wants to be the long shooter with a low shooting percentage. I don't think that would go over with Dutch unless he can fix that cause he'll kill rallies or just don't shoot so early in the clock.
First time I've seen Yanni, he's taller than Nathan so we're well represented up front with Yanni, the Mensah's, and Narain, but he didn't seem like much of an offensive force to me for a guy his size and has a tendency to have the ball slapped away when he dribbles.
Point Guard Trey Pulliam was a pleasant surprise, had great movement and ball handling, and could score.
Nolan really surprised me with a nice inside game and hook shot. I'd like to see him tougher inside on defense but he got his share of boards.
I thought Guard Caleb Giordano looked good also, although Pulliam is faster with more upside, he seemed very poised and aggressive whose not afraid to mix it up inside.
Joel Mensah is young and needs work but thats to be expected. I like his size.

After reading the observations of the last couple of posters, it leads me to ask the question...are these guys coaching themselves? I mean who is calling up set plays and what defense to run, etc. Can this league really be any kind of barometer for how these guys are going to perform in November and beyond. The Matt Mitchell observations have been all over the board, literally. From he's a man among boys, forcing his offensive will on defenders, to the observation above that he's sitting outside the 3 pt line hoisting 40 footers. Is there a coach on the sideline, whom Matt might respect, telling him to quit taking those 40 footers?

Is there a coach on the sideline, whom Matt might respect, telling him to quit taking those 40 footers? Here's the guy that's "coaching" Mitchell's team. It seemed to me that he spent most of the game talking and laughing back and forth with Trey Kell on the other team. I saw almost all one-on-one stuff. When Mitchell got the Technical, I didn't see anything from the coach either. sdstrength.com/2017/12/get-better-hoops/I guess it's ok. It's more organized than if guys were just hooping it up on their own. At least there are refs, a clock and some semblance of organization. It's a great idea but the rosters are very fluid, the website is weak on stats and results and it's mostly playground ball. But it's free and there's parking so you get what you pay for. If the coaches were afraid it would hurt the players, I don't think so many of them would be playing.

Is there a coach on the sideline, whom Matt might respect, telling him to quit taking those 40 footers? I don't think they practice together. I'm pretty sure it is just a way for the players to get up and down the court and stay in a little bit of basketball shape. Hang out together, etc. Looks fun actually.... I went last night, and it is pretty cool to see the players that up close. The intensity isn't anywhere near a regular college game, but you can get a little idea of the players. Last night Trey Kell was the best player on the floor for his game (6:30 game). He played pretty good D on Mitchell (they are about the same size). Trey also hit a bunch of three's. Mitchell tried to match it, but that didn't happen. The next game (8:30), a player from PNLU looked like the best player on the floor! Yanni is about as big as Nathan and Joel. He does look like a good overall basketball player, with a good understanding of the game, and a good overall skill set. The new player from JC (Trey Pulliam) looked like the quickest player on the floor, but he didn't play that much and wasn't really in the flow of the game. It looked like Keshad Johnson had played in an earlier game, wish I could have seen it.... Anyway, I wouldn't take much from any of it one way or the other, but like I said, it was fun just to watch the players that close up. Very cool experience, Hope it gets exposure and stays around. If anyone gets a chance to go, I would recommend it. I think there are only a couple of weeks left.
