+ Grand Canyon 11/13/19. Aztecs 0-2 vs. GCU. Geez.. Another random weekday game. This will drive attendance and student section to show up. Only 3 Saturday games so far. At BYU 11/9, at Staples Center Los Angeles vs Utah 12/21 and then home 12/28 versus Cal Poly SLO. Come on Dutch, what's the aversion to playing home games on the weekend? Afraid of SDSU FB?

It’s annoying 0-3 against GCU, the story of Aztec Basketball these past few years. GCUs top three games: Illi, UNM and SDSU gculopes.com/news/2019/8/28/sdsu-road-game-added-to-schedule.aspx

If we're going to play any local campuses; I'd like to see us play UCSB or UC Irvine.

Dont get me wrong I think we should be playing USC/UCLA, U of A/ASU, CAL/STAN But, we can't seam to get a PAC12 game besides Utah and CAL. UCLA has a rule that they wont play a CA school outside of Pauly.
We would be competitive against schools above. However, UCI and UCSB have been leveling up and are NOT ranked 200 to 300 like most of the 2019 OOC.

Bumping this thread because I want to.
Soria still searching for a game as of the end of August. We are looking for a high major to start a home and home, with the 2019 game away from Viejas on either Nov. 15/16 or Dec. 11. Ideally a return game in 2020, but I HOPE that we aren’t still tied to this no one-off/2 for 1 strategy - we NEED to accept our scheduling disadvantages and embrace it.
**I’ll shoot my shot here and say we get SMU in December.**
Likely that a home game has already been scheduled for Dec. 13/14th or the 18th. Likely not a big game.

I think the program’s mentality about scheduling has always been too big for its britches. This is seems especially true in the post-Fish era.

I get the morality of it and thinking behind it, but I also think we’re running up against reality and the way the game continues to reward P5s at the expense of high MMs. I don’t think we should go murderers’ row like Long Beach back in the day, but a 2 for 1 against a Gonzaga or Arizona, or even traveling once a year for a one-off against literally any top tier P5 is going to become inevitable. And if Soria/the staff don’t see that in time, we’re going to be in trouble when it comes to putting together an OOC that keeps us away from needing to win three in three days in March.

Yeah, Monson used that as a recruiting tool pretty effectively for a while there, but we don’t need to do that. SDSU has the facilities to be competitive with the majority of P5 schools in basketball, and for all its warts the MW is better than the Big West, so I agree the LBSU route is too much. I’m just tired of hearing about how SDSU can get “better” games than MVC or A10 challenge games only to have a schedule full of body bag games. And this isn’t football—we don’t need to schedule NMSU and hope they’re good in 7 years. There’s no shortage of solid mid major programs that are local and decent to good, year to year (Irvine, Long Beach, UCSB, St. Mary’s, etc). They shouldn’t be beyond our reach. Nor should legit programs we should be able to schedule if we’re willing to take a 2 for 1. Only thing I can think is it must be a money issue, and it really is just that necessary to play Arkansas St Pine Bluff rather than lose that revenue for a game at Arizona. I guess if the program keeps its current trend and the schedule remains so uninteresting the problem will take care of itself when the average home attendance is 4k. Sigh.

I spoke to Matt Soria on the Aztec staff a while back about the Aztecs MBB OOC and asked why were not playing many Saturday games, he wouldnt really commit to telling me anything; however, did mention a few items. BYU needs to be a home & home to move forward (that has been committed) The MW conference dictated some of the MBB, decided not to play on some Saturday's due to football conflicts. By early Dec 7/8: the Mountain West determines game dates (Home vs. Road) and lasty, Dec 14/15: is Finals Week and we can’t play games. He also did say that they are continuing to look for the highest quality opponents for games in Viejas. I am prety sure, he didn't appreciate me asking for better opponents and to play games on Saturday nights. At thi point the Aztecs have not finished the OOC and can't announce games and dates.

Another twitter account/google doc I found that's awesome is D1 Docket -- guy updates all the schedules as they come out. SMU would be cool -- we seem to have been recruiting a little more in the Dallas area. The home/home I'd love to see scheduled (and they appear to have availability in December) is Oregon State.
