We do not appear willing to learn anything from anybody at present.

We do not appear willing to learn anything from anybody at present. Just a thought Win.... every great culture in the history of Mankind has crashed and burned.....eventually to be replaced by something else. What makes you think it won't happen in the US no matter who is in power? Everybody dies, every culture dies...the only constant in history is that nothing stays the same....

A valid thought, but does it mean that we should just give up? Should we try to save our financial structure or just spend and tax till we go up in flames?

No...but trying to recreate the late 1950's won't work. And what makes you think that the Republicans or the Democrats run this Country? I think the corporations and Wall Street have more power. And as far as spend and tax... it would be interesting to see just what public services the far Right would be willing to give up.... garbage, fire, police, road improvement etc. When I worked at the County many years ago, and there was a land dispute, fire issue, fence dispute, neighbors pissed off about a chicken farm...... guess who was in line together?... the far Right guy and the far Left guy. "This country is being destroyed by George Bush".... "this country is being destroyed by Obama"... maybe the issues are more complex and deeper than that. The simple argument does get old after a while really.... but makes lots of money for media types (FOX).

Again, you have good points, but you must note that I and others have said that we would give up the Dept of Education for a starter. That is and should be a local issue. You single out Fox, but all media are guilty of the same things from different points of view. I wish you would look at the basic question of cutting spending and living within our means. Defense can be streamlined and spending cut without giving up one critical or even Semi critical program. It is about spending smart and we just are not up to that task at the present. The same thing can be said for every part of government at every level. It takes people with the guts to face the real problems and take action to correct them. It means far reaching initiatives like gutting unions of much of their influence while making sure we don't return to a sweat shop world. You have to see that there are huge problems that could be worked on but for politics and self interest by politicians.

Unfortunately, the argument is lost in mnay other directions. For example the "Birth" issue. How does that help the argument? Demonizing the opposition waters down the very valid point you made. If the Left and Right did not absolutely despise each other, it would not be as hard to accomplish things now.

The real unfortunate thing is that the Left and Right that are at each others throats act much like we do on this board. In real life, I would never let the "birth" issue cloud what I would work for. That thing is taking care of itself now by people and some States being aware that there is a question. Next time there will be no question. If just two or three states make the candidates show their documents it will be enough to keep them off the ballot in some places, but it will inform people in all places what the situation is. You do not have to expose yourself if you can let others carry your water. I would work for fundamental education of all elected folks in how things really work. You see, how you carry on in an internet forum is really not all that important in the big scheme of things.

Actually Win... with a notable exception (AF) I think people on this board are very civil...
