Twenty years ago in 1998 a very good Aztec team played UNLV who was 0-10. UNLV won when the Aztecs played very poorly and missed a winning field goal at the end of the game. Deja vu?

I was there for that one. I was so pissed. It cost us a bowl bid. I still remember the "splat" sound when the kicker hit the final FG attempt. It wasn't even close. Ugh!

I went to that debacle game in 1996 in Las Vegas. The windy bowl game against north Carolina was in 1998. I joined Hank Bauer, Randy Jones and Gene Alim for that 1996 game. Hank shared a lot of football knowledge. What a fun trip despite catching the red eye home for pro football the next day and the loss.

Did Ex-USC coach John Robinson coach that UNLV team?

It was 1996 when SDSU lost to an 0-10 UNLV. We didn't play them in 1998. Ironically, Jeff Horton was the Head Coach for UNLV during this time.

I was at the 1996 game as a student SID.
We went from ending the nation's longest winning streak vs a ranked Wyoming team the week prior to ending the country's longest losing streak the next week.
After 4 quarters of lousy football still, we had a chance to win with a FG, but Holt pulled a Trakas.
I think we went 9-3 and no bowl. It cost us the WAC title.

I think we had 8 future NFL players just on offense:
Turley, Salaam, Pitts, Watson, Jones, AZ, Blackwell & Femi.
I believe Ricky Parker, Glover, Kabeer & Akbar were the guys on D who made the NFL.
That's a ton of wasted talent

was Horton the coach of the 0-10 lv team? if he was, the record shows his o coaching skills. sort of? maybe? I can still see the lv receivers making the Aztec D look like cones. and no bowl game because of it. Aztec big heads are still a problem. ya gots ta play the game on the field, not on paper.

Erik and I attended the 1998 Las Vegas Bowl. Football is played in rain and snow, but few mention the challenge of playing in conditions just short of the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. What a mess! The Tar Heals should count themselves lucky to have won that one. Very lucky!

Yes, I remember one punt that went into the wind that went backward. Wind was 50 mph plus and the dust was unbearable all of us that went came home sick from the dust.

I was at the game having drunken fun jumping off short walls with my windbreaker open. I actually glided in the wind jumping into it. lol

Actually, if you paid more attention to records you would notice that UNLV usually comes up with a victory over us once every four meetings. Although this time it has been one out of five. Their last victory over us was in 2013 when they won 45-19. That is the last time they had a winning season under Bobby Hauck the coach who became our great Special Teams coach.
This year you could see that UNLV had great size on both the OL & DL, and that along with a great game plan (ten in 'da box) stopped our rush game.
