The 5 starters at the beginning of this season were Richards, Ross, Lamet, Perdomo and Mitchell. Ross is gone and the other three have suffered through various injuries which have caused them to collectively miss over half of the season. The total payroll for all of them was under $7 million. The Padres pretty much got what they paid for relative to other teams.
It will be interesting to see who is in the starting five next season. It looks to be another low cost staff, in my opinion. Round up 20-30 guys and throw out the usual suspects.

Lucchesi has pretty cemented his status. Expect Lamet to regain a rotation spot in May or June. Nix has shown well outside of one inflated start. The wild card is going to be Matt Strahm, who is going to be stretched out over the winter. There will also be either a trade or a free agency pickup. Best guess would be a mix of Nix/Lauer/Lucchesi/Lamet/Strahm and an outside the organization guy. There are a handful of other candidates, though. Logan Allen, Paddack by midseason, etc.

Absolutely. Don't think he has anywhere near the rotation upside. He's very valuable as a swing guy.

What the heck is it about Padre pitchers and the 5th inning? Seems like they fade in that inning so often after strong starts.

I would like to Padres to continue the bullpen days experiment. Giving a pair of pitchers 3 Innings every 5 games allows them to pitch another couple innings in between. That will almost always be better than your fifth starter.
