...can get a lease for SDCCU Stadium into 2019, but SDSU can't get a lease extension signed. Doesn't make a great deal of sense, especially when both initiatives slated for the November 2018 ballot require that the city keep SDCCU Stadium standing--at least until a replacement soccer or college football stadium can be built. I believe that Soccer City's plan was for the city to operate and maintain the current stadium, while SDSU offered to take over the operations of the current stadium. Perhaps the city is afraid that SDSU could do it for millions less than the city is currently spending on the facility, making the city look bad (not that making the city look bad is really that difficult).

They (the city) seem to be very good at doing so by themselves, don't they?

Their lease would end in May. It's my understanding nothing has been or will be booked after June, 2019 w/o the SDSU extension.

The city says lots of things.
