To me he moves slow. I watched him last year and tried to imagine him in an Aztec uniform but couldn't see it. It seems he thinks he's still the small forward out of high school, when he should be inside banging. Notably, last year almost 60% of his shots were from three (second most three attempts on the team), while averaging just five rebounds a game. He's not slow, he's just lazy & uninterested most of the time. Hence why he settles for 3s. If Musselman can light a fire he'll have something, but 2 other coaches have failed to do so.

How good at defense were KJ and Malachi before coming here? I wonder if Dutcher's strategy is to recruit better scoring guards and teach them to play defense. I've never been a coach in my life, but I have to think it'd be easier to teach a guy who shoots 43% from 3 to play good defense than it is to teach a good athlete/defender to shoot that well (as we saw from Fisher's tenure, the latter rarely happens). That's a really good point, we have never had success teaching people to be better shooters but we have had success making people into better defenders. On the other side of the coin, you can't teach length/athleticism

Matt Haarms 7'3 250lbs, 22 years old from Purdue via Amsterdam in the Transfer pool, tell Dutch. "The 7-foot-3 Haarms has been a mainstay in the Boilermakers' rotation the last three seasons, starting 41 games during that time. Last season, he averaged 8.6 points, 4.6 rebounds and 2.0 blocks, after putting up 9.4 points, 5.4 rebounds and 2.1 blocks in 2018-19. Haarms had a career-high 26 points against Minnesota in early January." Pretty solid numbers in the Big Ten league.

Time to start showing reruns of the "Undie Run" to the potential recruits. Does he, perchance, like to surf? Palm trees and sunshine? A team that puts a very serious emphasis on playing defense?

New Mexico just got a commitment from a 6'6" guard from Hutchinson JC, Sequan Singleton. Their board thinks they just signed Walt Frazier. His video shows repeatedly him posting up a bunch of short JC guards, which is how he got 7 rebounds a game and had a 54% FG percentage.
But his FT% was 53%!!!!! That was up from a 46 FT% the year before. And he took 1(!!!) 3 pt shot the entire season and missed it.
Can't wait to put him at the line in the last 2 minutes of a close game. D1 athletes are going to eat him up.

So this is... something. Not really Aztec-related but found it surprising.

Branden Burke enters transfer portal. The 7-foot, 245-pound big man played in 32 games, starting seven, in 2016-17 for Robert Morris, a small, private university in Pittsburgh. He played 15.2 minutes per game for the Colonials that season, averaging 4.3 points and 2.7 rebounds.
Burke then decided to return closer to home and join MSU as a walk-on. After sitting out the 2017-18 season to satisfy NCAA transfer rules, he played in nine games in 2018-19 as the Spartans won the Big Ten and reached the Final Four. Burke totaled five points and three rebounds over 13 total minutes that season.
Wonder if he would consider being a walk-on and playing?

Decent rebound numbers for a guy that plays 25 minutes.
