Looks like Vance Jackson is now in portal as 5th year transfer. 6’ 9” 220 forward from New Mexico. Not sure if MWC has restrictions on 5th year senior in same conference. Not a bad option and believe his numbers would improve with our team.

think Vance wants to play the 3 or even the 2 not the 4 or 5 positions that we need help with for 2020

Another name to keep an eye on - Charles Minland, from USF. GTR, who was their top scorer. Not a shooter (64% from the line; sub 30% from deep), but a slasher scorer who gets to the line, and with our perimeter players would be a nice fit. Very athletic & long at 6'4.
Dropped 22 & 19 on Zags in his last 2 games against them.
Not sure what's he's seeking, but if reaching the NCAA tourney is his goal we'd be a good stop! Might be looking to play in a P6 and/or teaming up with his old coach at WSU?

Not sure if this has been posted, but it looks like we may have interest in CSU northridge grad transfer Terrell Gomez
Only 5’8”, but career 3 point percentage over 40%

Kid can score/play - dropped 31 on Fresno with a 7-14 from deep performance. Gotta love his range. Only question mark is the 5'8? I picture a shorter version of Devin Watson, except he didn't play the point for them. A 5'8 SG seems a little odd? EDIT: Apparently played the point more as a FR, but moved to the 2 the last 2 seasons when they brought in a couple other guys. May want to go somewhere where he can play the point more?

John Sharper was listed at 6'1" but I'm pretty sure he wasn't that tall. I'd love to have a Patty Mills kind of guy who could come on and was quick enough to get open and hit some threes. Not sure how we'd hide him on defense though.

Vance Jackson is going to Arkansas. Musselman remembers him from when the Lobos upset his undefeated (at the time) Nevada team.

How good at defense were KJ and Malachi before coming here? I wonder if Dutcher's strategy is to recruit better scoring guards and teach them to play defense. I've never been a coach in my life, but I have to think it'd be easier to teach a guy who shoots 43% from 3 to play good defense than it is to teach a good athlete/defender to shoot that well (as we saw from Fisher's tenure, the latter rarely happens).

Neither were known as defenders. I even asked Mal's former coach if he could become a good defender, and he said in the right system he has the smarts & enough athleticism to get there. It's amazing what scheme & coaching & desire can do to elevate a player defensively. Mal had the advantage of an extra year, but KJ picked up his defensive game considerably over little time. He's athletic enough to be a "gnat" on D and bother people, but the tough thing is the ability to isolate him in the post off ball screens. We love to switch. But a 6'6 guy can isolate a 6'0 guy (Mal & KJ) just as easily as a 5'8 guy, and it didn't hurt us too bad. But on the flipside, he's a tough guy to guard as well!

Good for Vance Johnson I think this will be a good coach and school for him. I think he knows this is it for him. Dutcher would have been a great coach for him because poor effort is the fastest way to get yourself out the game with Brian. Ask Mitchell. It only happen a couple of times but the message was there.
Terrell Gomez seems like a really good option if Flynn goes NBA. I wouldn’t worry about 5’ 8” if his numbers stay like the last 3 years.

We chased this Cam Mack once. Went from SFA Texas > SLC CC > St Johns (never played) > Nebraska and he still has 2 years left. I dont think we want this in the locker room. Like a cat with 9 lives, looking to land in his 5th school with two years left? aztecmesa.proboards.com/thread/58442

Gotta be one of the biggest disappointments in NCAA MBB, we chased him, top 50 player > UConn, > to UNM, > to Arkansas. I bet he ends up playing off the bench. What happened to Vance, such a promsing career. I guess he didnt put the work in? www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/player/stats/_/id/4066442/vance-jackson

A good player but not what he was projected to be. Out of high school Jackson was listed as a 6'7" 205 small forward. Last year at NM he was listed at 6'9" 230, although he looked heavier. To me he moves slow. I watched him last year and tried to imagine him in an Aztec uniform but couldn't see it. It seems he thinks he's still the small forward out of high school, when he should be inside banging. Notably, last year almost 60% of his shots were from three (second most three attempts on the team), while averaging just five rebounds a game.
