Everyone will just get less when the contracts are up for negotiations.

Is it possible for espn to declare chapter 11 so they can renegotiate these horrible tv deals?
It just seems that you can cut so many employees before bankruptcy becomes the only option.

Not surprisingly, SI has some pretty scathing coverage this morning. www.si.com/tech-media/2017/04/26/espn-layoffs-firings-list-detailsThis really is ESPN's 'red wedding' (for you Game of Thrones fans). Pretty damn significant. ESPN will or won't successfully adapt to the new media era and threat(s) from rivals like Fox Sports and cultural shifts in conventional viewership. Easy analysis... this portends a very likely decrease in payout for college conference media deals NEXT time around after current contracts expire.

Sounds like Andy Katz got the axe too! Is there any chance MWC media improves by hiring some of these ESPN employees??

Also, There's an over-saturation of sports, sports networks, and sports shows. College conferences have their own TV networks. The ability to get instant scores from a mobile phone. Complaints about ESPN going political and having a left-leaning bias, e.g., awarding Caitlyn Jenner the Arthur Ashe Courage Award; coverage of the Kapernick fiasco; moving a golf tournament away from a club owned by Trump; firing Kurt Shilling; firing Doug Adler; supporting the Women's March on Washington; honoring Obama on MLK Day; studio personalities like Kornheiser, Smith, Blackistone, and Wilbon taking political stances, etc.)

ESPN has become hard to watch. Way too many debate and talk talk shows. It's like watching AztecMesa. I want to watch sports even if it's replays of big games and big plays.

Unfortunately they fired a couple writers that have always been friendly towards the Aztecs, Andy Katz and Eammon Brennan.

You got my complaint exactly on the nose! Sports use to be just about sports. Not all this extra curricular activities which really hurt everyone involved. All the news with who just got into a bar fight, got caught w/drugs, or arrested for raping some female gets just absolutely boring to me. I don't want to hear about any of that. With all the $$ money ESPN has put out on their sports programming it is no wonder at all that sooner or later they would get to the point where it becomes impossible to maintain that pace. Now they have to cut back, and start being more careful how they spend their money. Will that hurt the P5 conferences? It could, but now you may find them using other commercial enterprises to bring in the bucks they have been used to receiving. This may help other sport cable networks grow by picking up some of these reporters/tech people which they let go, and become stronger competition to ESPN.

I would actually like to just watch highlights. Might be better if they just repeat the sportscenter over and over instead of the talk show format.
